This is a new forum, there are other earlier Windows Vista issues and comments posted in the general "Microsoft Windows" forum. We will slowly move older threads into this forum. Please post all new issues and comments about this operating system here. Thank you!

My computer is corrupted. Recently I started getting a warning flag that my computer was unprotected. I checked Windows defender and ran scan which says my computer is normal and all updates current. Then I tried to download Microsoft Security Essentials but that failed to download properly. In the Windows Security Center everything is turned on except Malware protection. When I try to turn that on it shows that I have AVG Anti-Virus Free edition 2012 but it is OFF and it also shows that I have Microsoft Security Essentials which is also OFF. However, I had tried a couple of days ago to Uninstall AVG but that did not complete. Now when I click on the AVG icon it tells me to wait until the current uninstall is finished - or words tom that effect. Which means I can not uninstall anything else either because that same phrase pops up. Also, when I click on Internet Explorer (9) a page comes up which shows AOL.co.uk. I've never had AOL so it looks like a hijack on my browser. Even my Yahoo Mail does not work unless I bring it up via Google. Comments, please.

Hi and welcome to Computer Help Forums.
First you will need the AVG removal Tool to completely get rid of AVG.
    Here
    http://www.avg.com/w...lities.tpl-auth

Next I strongly advise to download "Malwarebytes" free edition and run a full scan.
    Here.
    http://www.malwareby...warebytes_free/

    Please post what Malwarebytes finds.
If something prevents you running Malwarebytes then run in Safe Mode.
    Tapping F8 on boot.

If you have a legit OS then I see no reason why you can't install MSE.

Thank you, DSTM. I somehow finally got rid of AVG. Not sure exactly how. May have been through Device Manager. My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium and after chatting with an online 'fixer' he told me not to worry about downloading MSE as long as I had other protection. My other MAJOR problem is that my Multimedia Optical Drive system which came with the computer is not working. Nothing happens when I place a disk in the tray so I went and bought an external CD/DVD ROM but find I am getting no response from that either. Any comments on that?
PS Haven't yet tried to download "Malwarebytes" yet but will do so.
    Again, many thanks.

It wouldn't have been through Device Manager - but as long as it is gone.
Did you run the removal tool that DSTM posted earlier ?

Yes, I have tried Microsoft FIXIT but no luck. One strange thing about the DVD/CD-ROM drives Driver listed under Device manager is that it shows "HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH40L.
Should that be 'DVD-ROM'? When I follow the Update Driver instructions given in Device Manager I am told that the most up-to-date driver for that device is already installed. In a different section it tells me that the driver has been disable and may be using another driver for this functionality. Yes, DSTM, I believe I did run that Removal Tool.
    Thanks again.MH

Hi.Try rolling back the driver in device manager.
Device manager > expand CD/DVD Rom drives > Highlight CD/DVD entry > Right click on properties > Select Driver from top options and select "Roll back Driver" > Click OK

There seems to be no reason to go to the trouble of moving and reconstructing this thread but I do wish that Post 1 would have been read more carefully.

I've been through Device Manager several times and tried all things available to me but NOT Roll-Back. Just tried it now and the roll-back box is greyed out - can't click on it. So, the plot thickens. Thanks again for your reply.

Click on Start and in the start search box, type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes). When devmgmt.msc appears in the programs list, right click on it and select "Run as Administrator". See if the driver rollback option is there now.

Failing that Google your motherboard version and click on download and reinstall the drivers in question.
Example only. You would google "ASRock N68-VS3 FX" as in my case.

    Pegatron Benicia 1.01 Review
Pegatron Benicia 1.01 is a relatively old motherboard with support for only one GPU and DDR2 memory type. It's not manufactured anymore and there is no driver support.
    Quoted from:
LINK Removed as it went to the home page of game-debate.com not the relevant driver page
P.S. Also edited colours for clarity CHF ADMIN :)

Not quite sure what happened here. Should I try Googling again for the driver?
    Thanks

You can Google and try and find drivers.
I googled and spent some time looking for you, however all the leads ran into a dead end.

I appreciate that very much, DSTM. Just for info I went back and googled again -Benicia 1.01, found a driver (original, I think), went through the download process only to be told at the end that "The update did not complete successfully (9994). Sent that info to Microsoft but may never get a reply. Reading some of the blogs would indicate that it is a well known problem but requested fixes ignored. That begs the question - why does the external DVD/CD ROM drive not work either. Is it a computer problem? Anyway, many thanks for all your interest and support in trying to get bto the bottom of this. If I should get a response from from whoever, I will let you know.

For DSTM: Success, success, success at last for my DVD/CD problem. Went to HP Support and followed the instructions for DVD/CD trouble shooting. Was directed to enter 'regedit' in the 'search' box and removed the 'Lower Filters'. There was no entry listed for 'Upper Filters'. Put my DVD in the slot and lo! and behold!, it worked. Thanks for all your help. Before I go though, I have a problem now with a pop-up which is an irritant. The box that pops up has Internet Security at the top and tells me "A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer" - Adobe Flash Player. No matter which option I chose - allow, don't allow, do not show me the warning for this program again or X it it keeps popping up every time I click on something. Don't know whether it's an IE problem or an Adobe problem.
Appreciate any light you can throw on this.
    MH
