    Good morning to all,
I have a bit of a problem with my boot order and would like to make some changes. First let me tell you what I have done. I had a bad bug in my system, so I ran AVG to get rid of the bug. Well when I did that and rebooted, I found out that I lost my Internet icons, and the use of the Internet.
So I restarted in safe mode to look for a way to reconnect to the Internet, and found that the bad bug gobbled up all ways / paths to my Internet. The only thing that I could think of, was to reboot from my CD/DVD in safe mode and reformat my hard drive and reinstall Windows Vista.
I had a back up, so I just deleted everything and done a clean install from the OS CD that came with my Dell Vostro 200 Desk top. After going through all that and getting all the updates, when I rebooted a black screen came up, saying that it couldn't find hdd 0, press f1 to continue press F2 for setup, . So I looked in the setup/ boot order, and sure enough there it was Floppy drive. So it's looking for a floppy drive as the first boot. I have no floppy drive.
    First boot order floppy drive.
Second boot is my hard drive,
    Third order is CD/DVD,
How do I get the right order on this ?
Any details on this will be gratefully appreciated.

´Restart the computer and as soon as computer restarts press F2 and that should take you into Blue screen.
Using down arrow key on your keyboard select Boot device configuration and press enter.
First Boot Device should be Hard disk
Second Boot Device should be CD/DVD drive
Make "Third boot device" and "Boot Other Device" as Disabled
Press F10 to save and press Esc key to exit and see if this should works.

Just as a quick note, the way the boot order works is it will look in the first location for an OS or bootable file, then if it can't it will work it's way down through the list. So it shouldn't really have any affect on your booting problems if you change the boot order. Saying that, I have seen a few problems related to boot up be fixed by changing the order, but that is only when there are multiple harddrives involved in the system.

But as Alan has shown above, those are the steps to changing the boot order in your BIOS. Always remember to save any changes you make before exiting the BIOS or they will be reset.

Let us know how it goes though.

Also, if the F2 key doesn't work, it should appear on the screen during boot "Press * to enter setup" Where * represents the specific key, sometimes it is Del, sometimes an F key. It is dependent on the BIOS you are running on your system at the time.

    Thanks guys,
I've been so wrapped up in other things, that I've not really worked on my computer. So here goes, When I turn on my computer, the first things that shows up is, can't find hdd 0 witch is a "floppy drive" Press f1 to continue or f2 for set up. I have no "floppy drive"
If I press f2 and try to remove the floppy drive as the first boot order, It will not let me. I've tried many times to fix the problem with no sasses.
I thought that I might reformat the hdd and see if that would work. I just have no clue how to fix this miss.
So I'll keep hitting f1 until I come with a fix.
If you need more info, I'll do my best to explain this on going problem.

Try disabling Floppy Seek ( or similar ) in the BIOS.

    Many thanks again!
If it were a snake I would have stepped on it a long time ago. Disabling the Floppy in the bios. did the trick.
Now I have one more thing that needs to be explained. Can any one tell me exactly what is a SM Bus controller, and what is it used for?

Hi, I actually had to open up my old XP machine to find a reference to SMbus. In my case it is a ATI SMBus device and then found that drivers are not needed or installed. I guess it is a part of the graphics control system in my case.
What are you finding is the problem with the SMbus you are seeing, and similar to mine is it preceded by other letters as in my case ATI.?
In general though BUS controllers are part of the system signal carrying as the USB is as in Universal Serial Bus.
Bus, is actually a fairly ancient term and is used to signify any distribution system, just brought up to date when used to define a part of a computer.
Certainly not double decked and part of London transport though. :snckr:

That is good to hear :)

Just to add to what Nev has written:

SM BUS = System Management BUS

It is a link with the PSU and specifically controls the ON / OFF function
It could also be linked to Temperature / Voltage Sensors and possibly the PCI slots

In my case, in the device manager list, I see "Other Device", under that is Device description, "SM BUS Controller", in properties / details / "Hardware Ids", it say's PCI \ ven_ 8086 & DEV_2930 & subsys_ 02381028 & REV_ 02

Still in properties, I scrolled down the list to "Location information" Value " PCI bus 0. device 31. Function 3"

I scrolled down to "Physical Device Object name"
    Value \ device \ NTPNP_ PC1006

My problem is, that it's telling me that this device drivers have not been installed. If I don't know what this is, should I install the drivers?

Hum, after what KenB has said, I researched a little more and from what I see it may be a part of the chipset drivers. Do you know if the chipset is Intel or not?
If it is Intel, have a look here=

I looked at the Manufacturer and it's saying unknown,\ Date, Not Available \ Version, not available \ Not Digitally signed.
I've tried to let windows install the driver and it say's, Windows could not find driver software for your device. I've tried to disable and enabling it, to see what would happen. I can't see any thing that changes the way my computer works, other then ,while enabled there is a yellow "! mark" beside it's name. If I disable it, there's an "? mark" beside the name.
If I can't find the manufacturer of the driver, then what can I do to fix?

If you are running Windows7 then all drivers have to be digitally signed.
XP you can install unsigned drivers after agreeing to the popup.
I don't know of a way to install unsigned drivers in Windows7 without playing with the Registry
I have an expensive Webcam and can't install unsigned Drivers for it so I use it on one of my XP Putas.

Just one more thing, while I'm in the other device list, scrolling down to "Parent", it's says, Value ACPI \ PNP0A08\
Is this any help to Identify what this driver is?
    Thanks for your help!
