WMP 11 says it is improperly installed and doesnt open. Trying download new 32 bit WMP 11 from Microsoft site. If I install it do I have to use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall existing version, or should I do this anyway?

Says it doesnt work because dbghelp.dll cannot be found.

Found dbghelp.dll on windows 7 PC in C\Windows\System 32. Copied to same location on XP, then Media Player did open, but still get no audio even after reinstalling new download from Microsoft and also a K-Lite basic codec pack.
Anyone know or have idea why this program suddenly lost audio when no other program did? I guess I dont really need it for I have WMP classic, MPC-HC 177 and also Video LAN VLC media player, but it annoys me it just quit playing audio. Tried Googling and found it is a common issue but no real solutions found. All the DLL did was to allow it to open but still no audio. The codecs didnt seem to help either. If there is a solution I would like to try it.

I don't know of any solution, BGBG other than the fact that XP is getting so old and more and more things within the operating system are breaking down. Maybe someone else may have the answer.

BG most of us use VLC Player anyway as it plays so many more files than WMP does and never has these issues. Oh and it works just fine in XP also.

Yeah...I like it. Didnt really use the WMP much anyway.....just got aggravated when suddenly it had no audio. If I find a way to fix it I will, but likely still wont use it much. Feel I am entitled to it. Part of Windows XP. ALso realized I had the Media Player Classic HC which plays audio and video.

I never use WMP or WMC on my Windows 8.1. VLC is must-have player. I recently tried a brand-new freeware- 5KPlayer (Windows/Mac version), and I'm super pleased with it now.

    Key Features of 5KPlayer
    • Play 4K/5K/1080p HD videos, DVDs and radio with revolutionary design.
    • Play MP3 AAC APE FLAC music perfectly to activate your senses.
    • Have built-in AirPlay sender/receiver to stream audio video.
    • Download online videos from YouTube, Dailymotion, Vimeo etc.

It's defacto a versatile player and downloader, a five star as well as VLC for me. High recommend to you folks.

Hey, Rich. Dont be upset. You HAVE always steered me right and I have had VLC player for quite awhile now and it IS default. Since December 22 the folder created date says, and somewhere above I did say I had it. Not unhappy with it. But I think I will give up on the WMP thing. Just hated to be defeated I guess. Prefer VLC anyway.

I will add that somewhere else someone was using some other player and complained of clicks, buzzes and other odd noises from that player while the computer was on line.
I recommended that they should forget that player and try VLC, they reported that doing so had cured their problem of odd noises.
VLC is possibly the best open source software of any type that I have come across, and beats most paid for solutions.

Thanks Rich & Nev. I think I am done with WMP anyway, but I do like VLC and when saw Nev's post wanted to try that also.Somewhere I read that it may not be good to uninstall WMP as it is part of Windows, so I just left it there. But I think I am dont with trying to fix it, if it is even possible to do so. Waste of time.

Yeah you can leave it there as long as VLC is default video player it hurts nothing.

How do I set VLC as default video and audio player? I see under Audio tab a Default checkmark and some other choices, but cant seem to find a video default setting. My video files have other players icons.

And, I havent really tried it yet but my videos seem to have 5Kplayer icon as the videoplayer and I can find not settings to change this. How do I remove the default video from 5K player, or will setting VLC do that? If so I need to know HOW. Apparently VLC and 5k can coexist-is this correct?

BG I am using version 2.21 and when you open Tools, Preferences the third header is "video" and midway down the page is a setting for default video.

Rich: first, thank you for letting me realize I was a few versions behind. Had 2.15 and now upgraded to 2.21. But the settings look same as they did. And ALL the videos on PC appear to have the default 5 player icon. Maybe Nev knows how to change this or maybe I am missing something, but evidently 5player has made itself the default player for all videos and I can find nowhere to change that. Would like to have 5player as a backup but do not like that it makes itself default. If someone knows how to remove default from 5player and make VLC default player and can tell me in case I AM missing something, I may have to uninstall the 5player to get control of VLC.
