Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown

I have a new HP Pavilion dv6200 CTO Notebook, and does not consistantly sleep
or hibernate correctly. The Error message from Vista Business OS (32 bit) is:

    ----vvv--------------vvv-----------
Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
    OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.6
    Locale ID: 1033

    Additional information about the problem:
    BCCode: 9f
    BCP1: 00000003
    BCP2: 848A4030
    BCP3: 86847030
    BCP4: 85BD9C48
    OS Version: 6_0_6000
    Service Pack: 0_0
    Product: 256_1

Files that help describe the problem:
    C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini072007-01.dmp
    C:\Users\business\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-166515-0.sysdata.xml
    C:\Users\business\AppData\Local\Temp\WERB1E0.tmp.version.txt
    -------^^^^---^^^^^^^^^^-------------^^^-----------

There is the option to click on a button to find a solution, but there is
    never a solution found.

After reading the threads in this discussion group on this TOPIC (Windows
has recovered from an unexpected shutdown), I tried what was suggested and
disabled automatic reboot to hone in on the problem.

Now I see that the issue is on SHUTDOWN.... It is failing to Shutdown
correctly, and a blue screen pops up.... I received the following message:

    -------vvvvvvvv--------------------vvvv----------
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
    to your computer.

    DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

It this is the first time your've seen this Stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these stesps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If
this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for
any windows updates you might need.

If problems conintue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing, If you
need to use safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer,
press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:

    ***STOP: 0x0000009F (0x00000003, 0x85066030, 0x86C163D0, 0x85259988)

Collecting Data for crash dump ...
Initializing disk for crash dump ...
    Beginning dump of physical memory.
Dumping physical memory to disk: 100
    Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system admin or technical support for for further assistance.
    --------^^^^^------------------^^--------------

So the issue appears to be with Shutdown, and explains why it has NOT
    shutdown correctly from the beginning....

Anybody have any ideas about the cause and solution for this?

I have some additional data points about this DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE ...

It was brought to my attention that MS Vista update KB938194 is to improve
the stability of Vista and the 9f error (dated 8/7/2007)

Another Vista Update dated 3/27/2007 KB936171 is specific for one issue
causing DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE... Unfortunately, when I try to install
this update, I am told that it is not for my computer.

Anyone have an idea about why it would not apply to my laptop with a dual
    core AMD processor?

Also I see that XP Pro has, I think, a software tool to help pin point what
    is causing a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE.

Does anyone know if such a software tool exists for Vista yet?

    Thanks,
    Steve_B

    Hi Steve,

I've been having the exact same frustrating issue since I bought my new Acer
laptop with Vista loaded on it. Its got to be Vista. Have you gotten a reply
to your question? Please let me know if you come up with a solution.

Would I be crazy to uninstall Vista and load XP? [IMG]

    Thanks much,
    Michele

    Hi Michele,

A person in the developer's forum asked me if I used ZoneAlarm yesterday and
this question lead me to the apparent solution...

    Do you use ZoneAlarm?

My answer was YES I do...

The person in the Vista Dev Forum told me he had had a similar problem as
mine and had discovered that UNinstalling ZoneAlarm solved this problem... at
least for four day in a row and counting...

So I UNINSTALLED my v7.xx ZoneAlarm and found that my laptop was able to
hibernate and sleep with no issues.... this solved my laptop problem... for
two days in a row and counting...

Here is a link to the other thread:

I am waiting to hear from ZoneAlarm (I opened an support request)... in the
mean time I am using the MS Firewall...

    I hope this helps.

I have a Sager with an AMD processor. I use System Mechanic Professional
(not Zone Alarm) and I have the same problem. I am using Vista Home Premium.
Could it be VHP? I also was configuring a new Dell for a friend who has ZA.
He got the same error message. He has VHP and an AMD processor.

I have the same exact issue, running Vista Business 32bit, and instead
of ZA, im running McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i.

Even when i leave for lunch, i return to my PC and see the same message
you do about the unexpected shutdown.

i've given up lookin for a solution, but man its a pain in the ass when
i leave things open for a quick lunch to return an have them all closed
    down.

the only help i've found so far seems to be sound/video card issues.
vista did just ask to update during this write up so i'll see if these
    updates solve the problem.

I kept getting this error message at least once a day. I had Zone Alarm. I
uninstalled and then installed the version that is supposedly for Vista.
Still had the same problem. I uninstalled that about 10 days ago and have
    not had the problem since.

    SteveB,
I have exactly the same probs as you, with same messages and 'no solution'
etc.. I have a new Fujitsu Siemens Laptop running Vista. (I was happy with
Windows 98, then I got used to XP pro, but I don't really get the advantages
of Vista). Anyway, I used to use Zone Alarm on my Desktop running XP, but I
haven't sullied the laptop with it. I find I get the problem usually within
the first 15 minutes of starting up. It seems to stabilise after a few hours.
But it still unnerves me and I'm fed up with losing stuff and having to start
    again.

Whoever finally finds an answer, please post with Capital Letters so I don't
    miss it.
I'm only pleased to find out that I 'm not the only person in the whole
world with this problem. Should I click that your post was 'helpful'?

I have an HP Pavillion with AMD and my wide has an e-machine. We were
networked on a wireless account...they are both Vista 32 Home Premium. It
cannot be the video cards because they are different. Its gotta to be Vista
    or a Virus.

MSN is not talking (unless you fork out the $59.00.

I think the thing we may all have in common is that we do not want to pay
for One Live...could Microsoft be behind this issue trying to coersec us into
purchasing their "One Care" product line.

I know AOL was adding software years ago so you could not install another
    web agent.

Perhaps another class action suit against Microsoft will turn their heads.

If you find out the issue let me know. Its just weird that it just started a
week or so ago and on my two completely different boxes.

Install an Uninterruptible Power Supply and take pills for paranoia. MS does
not do what you claim they do. You may be sleepwalking yourselves and
shutting the power down in the middle of the night.

Study computing, read what MVPs say, think, think think. Forget about the
    lawyers, they are crooks.

I'm not usually into conspiracy theories, but I think you might be right.
There are too many people posting the same problem. Surely we couldn't all
have the same 'set-ups' software and hardware. Clearly we are having thesame
problems on very different set-ups. I think it's about time MS (multiple
sclerosis?) found a solution and posted an updated 'patch' to correct it.
When I buy a product I expect it to work properly. I don't expect to have to
call an ambulance or buy bandages to get it working. If they can't do that
then they should issue us all with a replacement for Vista with Windows XP
    pro.

You have an option to go back to your XP, just search MS websites. Solutions
have been posted here many times.

Any paranoid thinking is idiotic. People do make mistakes even at MS but
first ensure that your power supply is UNINTERRUPTABLE.

What exactly is the problem? Did the computer hang when the screensaver came
on - hence the unexpected shutdown?

My problem was related to my video card Nvidia 8800GT failing to wakeup when
the computer went to sleep. Yes, I have the latest patches and updates.
    Problem began day 1 too.

I disabled sleep and I close the monitor when I'm not using it. Seems ok
now. Not the best solution. But...

It is a DELL chip I believe. Give them a call, send them email. Have a live
concierge talk. They are very responsive. I've dealt with them for many
years. It is not to say that they will solve every problem you run into but
I am certain they will try to do their best. It is just the nature of
    computer business.

If you want them to put new development on hold for a few years to devote
this time to debugging your Nvidia and countless other devices, let us know.
    Be realistic.

My computer, Windows Vista Ultimate, Dell XPS 420 keeps restarting and
    restarting and restarting...
Computer Specs; Vista Ultimate, DELL XPS 420, 4GB RAM, 2 - 250GB HD
(Mirrored), dual DELL 1908WFP monitors, and that's it...
When it starts back up, it keeps popping up a screen that tells me that has
    caused a problem...
it asks me to go to the Windows Update website but there are NO updates on
    it for this computer...
It has all of its updates... except for the language updates…
    It keeps getting a BSOD Driver_Power_State_Failure... 0x00000009F...
    whatever that is...
Could you please tell me what you think would cause that??? The computer
    will only stay on
about 30 to 45 mins and then it crashes… This time it crashed when I was in
    display settings...

Troubleshooting... apparently there are more than 117 unsigned drivers in
the DELL default version of the
NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT v7.15.11.6736, dated 10-19-07... but in the newer
    driver v7.15.11.6925, dated 12-11-07
    there are only 4...

I'm testing now... to see if the computer will stay on longer than 45
    mins... without crashing...
I'll try to remember to let you know how it turns out...
If you know anything more about this problem please let me know...

OK for a person who has no clue how to update my video card what do I
do. I have had the same blue screen shutdown for months and just found
this forum so any help would be appreciated.

Since you are using a web interface that leeches Usenet newsgroup posts
(*not* a real forum), I don't see the whole thread here. However, I believe
what "rowanrg" means is that you should update your video card drivers. See
below for general drivers information. If updating the drivers doesn't
help, please post back with a full description of your system and the
problem. You may want to access these newsgroups with a real newsreader
like most of the rest of us do. I'll also give you that information below.
And finally, if you find that doing the troubleshooting isn't your cup of
tea, there is no shame in taking your machine to a qualified local computer
professional. We all have our areas of expertise, after all. I don't
recommend using a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

    A. Drivers

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

    1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
    2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
    3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
    (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

    1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
    2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
    3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

    - System Information for Windows

If you have installed drivers from Windows Update, you can roll them back:

    B. Newsgroups

Since you are using a web interface, you may not realize that this is really
a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn to use
a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you can use
Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (Vista) since you already have it.

    Hi,

Most times, the steps are to:

    1) Go to the web site of the video card manufacturer, download the most
recent (non-beta) release appropriate for your video adapter. Often, it
comes as part of a supporting software package. Place this in a folder or on
your desktop where you can easily locate it later.

    2) Many will recommend that you uninstall the current software prior to
installing the new set. If so, reboot after the uninstall (this is usually
automatic). Windows will load a standard VGA driver during the interim step.
The uninstall routine is done through the Control Panel/Programs and
    Features.

    3) Install the manufacturer's new set per their instructions. Most simply
have you run an .exe file that expand the download package and proceeds on
its own. It is sometimes recommended that you temporarily suspend active
scanning by your antivirus software to avoid conflicts.

How about mine? this is what appears on the bluescreen on me

    -------vvvvvvvv--------------------vvvv----------

    damage
    to your computer.

    KERNEL_STACK_ERROR

It this is the first time your've seen this Stop error screen, restart
    your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these stesps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
    If
this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
    for
any windows updates you might need.

If problems conintue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware
    or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing, If
    you
need to use safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your
    computer,
press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe
    Mode.

    Technical information:

    ***STOP: 0x0000007F (sorry i forgot)

Collecting Data for crash dump ...
Initializing disk for crash dump ...
    Beginning dump of physical memory.
Dumping physical memory to disk: 100
    Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system admin or technical support for for further
    assistance.

    can anyone help me?
