Hi I have an HP computer it's pretty good so my son says it's an Envy. He uses it for games I use it for work. I noticed a windows 10 thing running and I really don't want it right now. I have a lot of important documents on my hard drive and I just have things the way I like it right now. One thing though is I don't have those disks that usually come with a PC it has the restore on the hard drive. Right now I am doing everything I can to keep that windows 10 from installing and if it's not enough and by some chance it does install, is the recovery on my hard drive with windows 8 still going to be good? Or legally valid?

Hello Penny. The key you have with Windows 8 should be perfectly valid even *if* windows 10 were to install somehow it does not affect the legitimacy of your original windows 8 key. Your H.P restore is typically on a separate partition which you see every time you boot up to hit a key to start that process.

As far as the windows 10 icon yes nearly everyone with windows 7-8-8.1 has had it and seen it. Just click "no" or the the best thing you can do is don't even bother with it. Microsoft is very smart so they will likely think of a way around that one too and force it from there - so anytime you do ANY kind of windows update first make sure within windows 8 update itself you select to 'notify' but not automatically download any updates. Therefore with that setting you can read the actual updates, all of them and make sure that the windows 10 "update" is not a on that list or even a part of that list.

There is a way to remove it Penny, but I'm not sure how familiar you are with removing installed updates. It's one of the "KB" updates that is installed. If you are comfortable removing it let me know and I'll kindly post how to do so.

Thank you Amd_Man I have never uninstalled updates. I would not begin to know how to remove them I would think it's more complicated than simply uninstalling a normal program?

Before I begin did you install a start menu like the older style or are you using the windows tiles?

Hello again I have the normal ( I think?) windows 8 menu with the tiles. I wish it was like the previous computer we had with windows version 7 honestly. It is upgraded to widows 8.1 but it is using the tiles.

Hi Penny. here's a start menu program that's free and it will make it like Windows 7 was. It will be much easier for me and you to do this with it. I don't use the tiles and never will.

To prevent Windows 10 from installing - find KB3035583 in Windows Updates & uninstall it.

When it comes back through Windows Updates again - right-click on the KB, select "hide update"

    Regards. . .

Sorry about that - you certainly are correct about the old dates. It was near the top of the threads & I just assumed it was current.

Unfortunately when you do that, the update can come back because most people never look at the updates being offerred.
    That's why I prefer the:

    GWX Control Panel

We don't close any threads unless there are problem threads so it makes it incumbent on the user to know that.
That was the old management style and I think long run that will be something we will change here and Johns post is one of the reasons. When
I first came here I did the same thing!
