    Here is just a Basic Guide on how to a perform System File Scan within Windows 7;

    Go to Start > All Program > Accessories > Right Click Command Prompt and Run As Administrator;

    Type In sfc /scannow and hit enter then let it complete the scan.

    The System File Checker will look for any system files/.dll file's that are corrupt and will attempt to fix these normally following a re start of your computer.

    This can also be run in safemode too by selecting Safemode with command prompt privilage.

    Hope you found this useful! ;)

    How I Speeded Up My Win 7 Shutdown Time

    I suffered from a very slow Shutdown time with my computer for quite a while.
    I spent hours going through all the usual methods like changing the WaitToKillService to a more reasonable time (mine is set at 3 seconds) but nothing would work.
    I looked at different running services and corrupt drivers etc.
    Why do I need to speedup the shutdown time? Simple, when I install or tweak something that requires a reboot I dont want to wait forever for it to shutdown and restart.
    Finally, I found this reg hack over at Windows Answers.
    The one thing I didnt look at was the Page File. So here is how I speeded up my ShutDown time.

    This involves editing the registry so make a backup or create a restore point.

    Click on the Start Orb and type regedit in the 'Search Box' then press 'Enter'.
    Navigate to
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
    With Memory Management highlighted, look in the right hand pane for ClearPageFileAtShutdown.
    Double click on this key and change the value from 1 to 0.

    This worked a treat for me! If you are suffering from a slow shutdown in Win7 maybe it will help you too. I havnt tried the hack in any other version of Windows so I cannot comment on that.

    Nice Tip Alan! ;)

    A few things to check first;

    Try opening the Task Manager just before shut down to see what programs are still running.

    Also maybe check that your pc doesn't need a good clean as in Cleaning the windows files, Old Temp Files etc.. And if you install/uninstall a lot of programs then maybe clean the registry using Ccleaner, or maybe your drive needs defragged.

    be wise to check for malware/virus too before modifying the reg values, just to be sure you have no serious issues going on.

    Another odd one in W7 regarding the Recycle Bin. If you know it is full of junk and you are sure it is junk, just right click on its icon and select "Empty Recycle Bin" the usual "are you sure" box opens so just click yes. Saves actually opening the darned thing to see what is in it if you already know.

    Also if you want to delete something, and your sure you never want it again, Hit SHIFT+DELETE .

    Deleted permanently. Doesn't even fill up your Recycle Bin.

    PSE Frank gave me this good Tip. :)

    Or right click on your Recycle bin icon, select Properties and from there you can uncheck the options you dont want like confirmation when deleting and bypassing the recycle bin. My favorite option is to reduce the recycle bin's allocation. 12% is way too much!

    Here is a tutorial on the recycle bin: http://computerhelpforums.net/topic/36475-tutorial-windows-7-recycle-bin-tips/

    This information came courtesy of a guy called Bazcaz on the forum IDF50, (I lurk there now and then) it is an extremely useful PDF guide to windows 7 written by Mike Halsey. Written to take in the basic right through to near geek level and well worth having a copy.
    It is quite a large download of nearly 25MB, so expect it to take some time if the internet is busy and a slow connection.
    Just click the download button.
