Before I have to read through 2-3 books and waste lots of my time will someone tell me please if TILES mode can be changed to something more familiar, and if tiles are somehow more desirable for some reason once a user gets used to them. Even if I preferred them later on I would like to be able while learning to use a familiar appearance if at all possible.
Do techs or non-techs actually find tiles better than other non-tile formats, meaning whatever I do now I should go ahead and learn to use them?

When you boot that computer, does it look kinda like the desktop that we're used to OR does it look like a bunch of square tiles like you might see on a tablet? If it doesn't look like a desktop, we might want to change that so it'll look more familiar.

Since you're experimenting with searches, try to find how to switch between Desktop mode and Tablet mode. If you need help, we're here.

Right click the task bar and select Properties.
Click the Navigation tab at the top of the window.
Put a check mark in the box next to Show my desktop background on Start.
Click Apply and Okay and reboot your computer.

When PC starts I see the black desktop I made with 10 program icons shortcuts. If I click windows logo lower left corner I get a screen full of squares and can expand the programs list on L if I click the icon under the power icon. These tiles I made small but want to get rid of them.
Cindy- mine doesn't look quite like you describe. A window that is titled Taskbar and Start Menu Properties appears with X in the box. When I click navigation it has Corner Navigation with a box and reads "Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell..........Do not see Show My Desktop Background anywhere.
I will keep messing with it until I find something. This is a challenge.

BG, want to do it the smart easy way, install this and it will look just like Windows 7.....it's what the pros are doing. That joke of a "start menu" will still be there if you ever feel like trying to master it. Oh and do 4.25, the newest.

Im not saying tiles are all bad. Only it is too different from what I am used to and right now I just need something familiar. I am sure i will get to using tiles but now I just need to get started. No time to read either. Do have 2 books. Nice to see you back, Rich.

Try the Classic Shell BG, you won't look back and you can still bring up the gross new start menu if you want to play with it from that.
    Glad to be back.

Hi ! I Went form XP to W7 to W10. I never ran W8.1 . I upgraded my W7 to W10. I made sure I could roll back to W7 with a Macriun Reflect image.
I see no reason to roll back to W7 at this time. These tiles I hear about are only present in W10, if I want them to be present.
Here's a screen shot of W10. This is my desktop. Do you see any tiles. When I boot into windows, this is what I see. There aren't any tiles. I'm not using any Classic Shell. This is exactly what my W7 desktop looked like before the W10 up grade. Can I find some W10 tiles? Certainly,by clicking the window logo. Do I some times click the window logo? Yes I do because there are some tiles I like. To me it's the best of two different OS's
I'm going to attach two screen shots and show you the different look! I hope I'm in sink here! Two different desktops. I like these tiles. I could delete them if I wanted to. I like them! The only time I see the tiles is when I click the window logo in the bottom left corner. Sorry if I'm not in sink with this thread. If you aren't running W10, then this is probably confusing. If you like the OS your running, then stay with it. I really believe that W10 will only get better. Sure there are minor bugs. There always is with up grades. This is my story and I'm staying with my story! The only way you're going to know if you like W10 is try it. Make a image before upgrading so you are sure you can roll back. Don't rely on the 30 day option to roll back. I don't trust it!

Hi BGBG! I'm not sure what Cindy is suggesting. Here's what I see When I follow her suggestion. It appears to put you in the Powershell instead of command prompt. It looks like you can switch back and forth. I'll give it a shot and let you know. I have a big day tomorrow,so will let you know later.
    Here's a screen shot!

The tiles are in the so called "Start Menu" now where they used to be the entire desktop in Windows 8.
You can remove everything from the "Start Menu" in Windows 10 and make it look like it did in Windows 7 which makes for much easier "motoring",
but that is exactly what Classic Shell does. For those that want to use it the top line of Classic Shell is still the old Start Menu of Windows 10, but I haven't yet met anyone who would want to.
I still use a third party program call "Free Launch Bar" to put back the old "Quick Launch" on the left side of the task bar as I started doing in Windows 7 and never paste anything to the taskbar
because those entries take up too much room and then you cannot see which programs are open from the ones pinned to the taskbar. Too confusing for this guy!
I do this on every pc I see or build and have for years and every single client thanks me!

Hi Rich! My task bar looks just like it did running W7. The only difference is I now have a circle and that's where my girl friend Cortana lives. I'm in love with Cortana. I'm going to win you over to W10 sooner or later. I know you don't like it. It is a little different, but I'm really liking it. I now know where every thing is and Cortana will find things for me. It really is amazing and scary how she starts acting different the more you talk to her. It really is a PC thing!
    What is Cortana?

Cortana is your clever new personal assistant.

Cortana will help you find things on your PC, manage your calendar, track packages, find files, chat with you, and tell jokes. The more you use Cortana, the more personalized your experience will be.

I wish you and Cortana much fun together but you will never see me do anything meaningful on a Windows 10 pc.
I suspect I will someday soon load up a pc I don't care about with that Bloatware Crap, so that I don't lose touch with how to manipulate it
into a workable OS, but other than that Sayonara baby!

LOL! I bet you felt the same way when you first up graded to W7. I agree W7 is a hell of a OS and I vowed I would die with it, but I've changed my mind. I won't try to convince you to upgrade any more Rich. You're just a little bit stubborn like me and that can some times be a good thing. Just don't talk religion or politics. Burn Bernie. My choice! ;);)

Actually I was in love with Windows 7 from the get go. It was the first time I ever installed a Windows version without
    waiting for the service pack.
My issues are simple. And this is just opinion and I have said it before, A new OS should either do something the old one didn't do or do something the old one did but quicker
or better. None of that is true of Windows 10. Microsoft is determined to get power users to want their systems to look like smart phones or tablets and it is unnatural.
Doing simple tasks in Windows 10 are double the work of Windows 7 and I can't see a single reason to use it.

I loved W7 also! I just don't see the same issues with W10 that you are having. I think it will get better as time goes by. MS says W10 is the last.
I guess we'll have to see if that is true! I just like teasing you Rich and see your reaction. I know I'm not going to convince you to be a W10 lover. LMAO

The last of this series...from here on they want us to pay yearly subscription for their product Windows that we will now rent from them.
By then if that really happens I will be somewhere else most likely on Linux.
