Maybe it should have been called Windows 7.5 instead. Windows 10 has some Windows 8 in it, but the new OS is mostly a partial apology for Windows 8 and bears the burden of building a bridge into the modern world for Windows 7 users. In my opinion, after using it every day since release, it’s a much better experience for Windows 7 users than those of us who used and enjoyed Windows 8.

Let me explain with a story.

We have family in this week from out of town. And, as you might guess, I'm the designated IT guy in our family circle. So, after hello hugs it was straight to business. "What do you think of Windows 10?" I was asked straight out of the gate. I try to avoid situations like this, so I pretended to be busy shoving food in my mouth, hoping that would be reason enough for my shorter than normal answers – most in the form of grunts. It didn’t quite work.

One family member had been using Windows 8 and allowed her PC to upgrade to Windows 10. She wasn't that impressed and found that it worked quite a bit differently and took extra time to get used to doing things differently. She was happy that her programs still worked, but a bit unhappy with how much time she spent learning a new system. She was glad to see the Start button make its reappearance, but found the All Apps area unwieldy. You see, despite misconceived news coverage, some people actually do (or did) like Windows 8.

However, it was interesting to find out that her daughter, who upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7, has no problem with it – at all. Why? Because there's more Windows 7 in Windows 10 than Windows 8.

And, this story is confirmation of what I've been experiencing myself. I've been using Windows 8/8.1 as a daily driver since the initial release and I'm also one of those people that liked it. I gave up the Windows 7 experience long ago, adapted to the new world, and felt I was better off for it. All while the masses grumbled, complained, and made conscious attempts to avoid Windows 8.

From a touchscreen perspective, Windows 10 is a step backward. Windows 10 has changed how I work, and in my opinion, it’s a change in the opposite direction. I use the touchscreen less and less these days, opting instead to jump out of tablet mode to use the keyboard and mouse – on both my Surface Pro 3 and my HP Spectre x360. I can kind of expect that with the Spectre, since it's an adapted laptop (2-in-1), but to alter how the Surface Pro 3 functions seems a bit strange, considering it was built for touch.

Snap Assist just doesn’t work as well in tablet mode. It's more difficult to pin app windows side-by-side using touch than it is using a mouse. And, for some reason, the Start screen scrolling vertically now instead of horizontally just doesn't seem functionally correct. It works, something just seems off about it. You could blame it on a couple years of using Windows 8 every day or a personality tic, but whatever.

And, with the recent and continuing Windows 10 Mail app woes, I've had to switch back to the full Outlook 2013 email client to ensure that my email messages are delivered reliably. Using the Mail app, I've had some email messages that never delivered, apparently still sitting somewhere out there – probably the same place where all missing socks go after a wash. The Outlook 2013 client is NOT touch friendly in any way. So, when I'm emailing (which is probably about 60% of my daily activity) I'm back into non-touch, laptop mode.

I do still use touch, but not for work related activities anymore. I use touch in tablet mode for games. That's it. The rest of the time the keyboard and mouse are my prominently in play. I loved touch in Windows 8 and used it constantly, but Windows 10, whether intended or not, is slowly weaning me off the reliance. I guess the old adage is true: what's old is new again.

It does make sense, though. Windows 8/8.1 was never able to gain market traction and the majority of Microsoft's audience for Windows 10 is those Windows 7 holdouts. Several in the industry, writers and vendors alike, blamed Windows 8 for a failing PC market. So, obviously, the new OS has to bridge the gap for those with upgrade plans and those who gave Windows 8 such poor scores. But this is the bridge that should've been built long ago and should've been labeled Windows 7.5. There's no question that Windows 10 is a compromise between Windows 7 and Windows 8, but it's extra heavy on the Windows 7 sauce.

Windows 10 is turning me back into a Windows 7 user, whether I like it or not.

Don’t get me wrong, Windows 10 is a fantastic upgrade, if you can get past the current list of quirks and bugs. I'll continue using it because I do like it. But, I hope over time that those of us that were able to tune into the Windows 8 way of doing things get better representation in future feature upgrades.

Here's my thing, Windows is lost, is it a mobile phone, tablet OS as in competition for Android or is it a laptop, desktop OS, seems Microsoft is trying to get one product to be 2 different things, and is failing. Even Apple use 2 similar but different OS's the last time I looked at a MAC, and iPad.

I liked Windows 8.1 on my phone just as much as I did on my computer.
I haven't yet upgraded my phone to Windows 10 but I am liking the 10 OS on my one computer.

Wow I'm am not having any issues thankfully, but I don't care for the way it's laid out I am finding it hard to find the things I use regularly. What is the best guide how to do this or how to make it more usable like I had before? I mean I can find some things but now instead of "programs" they are called "apps" which I don't care for. I guess it's all part of advancement in technology though I sort of like things I am already comfortable with.

There's a lot in the Win10 forum here..... also.. Google is your friend.

    It's only a name change.
Apps is the more modern term for programs..... blame smart phones for that! :)

I think this is the problem people have with Win10.
The younger ones seem to find it easy to use.
The older ones don't like change and want the world to stay as it was.
On saying that, I'm 61 and have no problem with getting to grips with new things.... you're as old as you feel.

Smart phones yes! They really have changed a lot of things, and now even some terminology in our computer windows version too. yes I do use google, though Bing sometimes too, sorry about that one I just thought with your expertise you knew some of the best guides and you probably do but I will definitely use google too. I did notice now there are a lot of nice guides already here linked up in the forums. I have a lot of reading to do.

I agree about being as old as you "feel" . I feel pretty young even though I'm not a youngster anymore. I'm pretty proud that I was willing to make the move to windows 10 and also with the advice in this forum I was able to upgrade my system to an SSD and better memory. So my system flies!

Wow h0t thread. I am getting older I know that but I refuse to let myself go quietly into the night. I have also installed Windows 10 Jim and I think overall it's very good. We need to keep our eyes peeled to new patches and the like but I think this OS will be quite good.

Starbuck, I can second your comments about age and change. I'm 71 and really like W7. I may ultimately switch to W10 but it is going to months down the road, if ever.

So far I liked the way Wind0ows 10 looked with the exception of the start menu which I immediately changed to Stardock8 Windows 7 start menu, but I found all my systems ran substantially slower. I have left my All-in-One with 10 but I doubt I will keep it for long. There is nothing on Windows 10 I need to have and lots of issues I am not going to deal with. I think this is the time we wait until the thing is ready for "prime time", maybe after Sp1.

From my understanding there won't be any service packs for this iteration of windows just like there weren't for windows 8. It's all patches and drivers from here on out.

That is what they say but we all know it depends on how much it takes to fix this mess of an OS, not theory!

I honestly don't see Win 10 as being a mess at all, Rich.

In fact, I don't see that big of a difference in the 10 TP from the RTM.

Cindy you are "drinking the cool aid"...come out and see the sky for goodness sake that sucker is flawed everywhere and could be the best example yet of a version that still isn't ready to be released.

    With respect, Rich.
Why would you have to use Safe Mode to get into Paltalk.???
Because you have a conflick with Paltalk on your system.:)
Bet half of your issues are caused by Emsisoft.
Get rid of it and your systems would run better.IMO
I am a mug compared to your vast knowledge, yet my Windows10 computers are flying.

My Windows 10 is not flawed in any way, Rich.
So many other people are not having any problems either.

The fact that you are may say something about your computers. :bnghd:

PS, I hate Kool Aid and never drink it! :D

Try a clean install, it may change your opinion drastically.

Dougie, you read that wrong, I installed it in Safe Mode it works fine in Windows now as long as I right click and choose "Run as Administrator" and that has to be because the problem is with Emsisoft and I will not uninstall that but I would bet if I were back to nod32 and Mbam, the issue would disappear. When I was trying to install it in Windows Emsisoft was going crazy with stopping it and quarantining it. I added t it to exclusion lists but the behavior did not stop. Emsisoft is definitely the problem.

Hi Rich. When you install Paltalk a (PUP) is automatically installed. Bet that was why Emsisoft was going crazy.
    The (PUP) is not dangerous.
I think is this case Emsisoft is too agressive. Saying you won't uninstall a program when it is causing an issue
    is just plain stubborn.:)
MBAM just picked up the (PUP) on scan and I quarantined it.
    It is PUP.Optional APNToolBar.A

Please no more blaming Windows10 till you get your house in order.

Dougie my house is in fine order and I did not blame Windows 10 and wouldn't because I said that the problem is Emsisoft and I know that it is. I have scanned that system with MBam and Emsisoft and no such "pup" is there....I can't explain that....

That is strange Rich. This is what MBAM picked up in full.
