Choose to use this tool to directly upgrade the machine you are running it on or create installation media.

29 July 2015 means Windows 10 has arrived and Microsoft has made it easy for any users to create their installation media to install the new OS.

This means if you understand the terms USB, ISO and installation media then you can jump the reservation line and begin your Windows 10 installation right now.

You can access the 32 and 64 bit version of the media creation tool from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

See the screenshots in this gallery for images of the process and what to expect.

The following are needed to use these tools:

    • An internet connection (internet service provider fees may apply).
    • Sufficient data storage available on a computer, USB or external drive for the download.
    • A blank USB or DVD (and DVD burner) with at least 4 GB of space if you want to create media. We recommend using a blank USB or blank DVD, because any content on it will be deleted.

Great information Cindy. This tool also comes in hand if/when you decide for a fresh installation you will need the new product key. This works well to get that key. The free version is all you need. Finding the key manually via CMD/Run did not work for me so I thought I would throw this solution out there.

Unfortunately, Jelly Bean doesn't give you the correct key on Windows 8.1.

Another way to retrieve it, slightly more difficult, is this command from within Parted Magic. It will generate the correct product key:

    hexdump -s 56-e '"MSDM key: " /29 "%s\n"'/sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM

You are correct Cindy - and after some research it appears even your method won't work if it's an upgrade from Windows 8/8.1 or 7. The method I posted provides only a generic key tied to your hardware config and your method will do the same because apparently all "upgrade" keys are generic tied to the hardware config. As of now no one is able to install clean for some reason after they did the update and wipe then trying to install clean. The way it's supposed to be done is by skipping the part where you enter/change the product key - as long as you had previously activated W10 when you upgraded and were online, and you see "Activated" supposedly you are good to go but this isn't the case. Could be a case of server overload but I am thinking MS messed this one up.

Here is one thread of people doing it the correct way - trying to clean install and it's just not working.

Good to know. Thanks, Chrono! Let's hope it's a server overload.

Maybe it was. I was able to get it activated no problem unlike a lot of others. So far really like it. It uses Windows Defender which is more like MSE in windows 10 as a default antivirus. It also installs updated realtek audio drivers along with the realtek software control panel for audio. Windows update will find your GPU drivers (video) but it seems it would not install the software for that so I downloaded a new Windows 10 compliant driver and got that functionality so I could alter colors, and set my GPU properties like anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering etc. Here is a screenshot of a fresh Windows 10 installation with nothing but the GPU drivers, Malware Bytes installed and nothing else. Just a few OS tweaks to get things where I want them. I am not sure if I need any CPU-Intel drivers installed but I doubt it more than likely they are already installed by the OS by default.

Well all motherboard-chipset drivers are updated within the OS itself. I sort of expected this though. CoreTemp and Ccleaner installed just fine.
