Windows 8 doesn't come with any games like solitaire or freecell, but you can download similar versions for free from the App Store. I find the downloads do not run as fast as the old MS resident games, and there is the constant advertising. I tried to copy the games from Windows 7 and Vista, but the Win 8 software will not allow them to run. Doing a search, I noticed there is a patch created by one person smarter than me to get the games to run, but I'd rather not tinker with the Win 8 software. As a last resort, I brought my old XP door stop out of the closet, and copied 4 games from it, Pinball and Spider work standalone, and Solitaire and Freecell will work if you include the file "cards.dll". I have them pinned to the start sceen, and although they lack some of the graphics of the new games, the run fast and light.

Huh??? Dang, I'm getting senile! I never even noticed that the games were missing in 8. I'm gonna have to play with that a little.

That DOES bring up a question. If a way were found to get Win 7 games working in Win 8 could the method/solution be posted here or would it be considered as breaking copyright?

I thought of that as well, and modifying the Win 8 software in any way to circumvent the built in measures, I'm sure would be frowned on. The XP games are all standalone and run from a .exe file, and personally, since I've paid for all the software, I don't see an issue with utilizing old standalone games for my own use.

If it was something you worked out, developed I don't see a problem, as you would have to purchase/own a copy of win 7 and win 8 to do it. unless of course you own a unlicensed copy of windows in which case you broke copyright before you started.

so I don't see any problems with copyright liable, it's only like changing the appearance or editing the windows 8 registry.

If it's something you find on a different site, then credit has to be given to the original author, site ether in the form of a link or a note in the post stating where the original post can be found.

I guess it is one of those gray areas, like getting Vista's Dream Scenes to work in Windows 7. Been done ages ago but whether it is right to do is a matter of interpretation.

Well I'm sure that if you were to take the time to read the Microsoft licence, they have something about modifying it somewhere, but without a team of solicitors to go through it I think it comes down to common sense, and in my mind if I own 2 music CD's and take my favourite songs from both to create a third new CD. what's wrong with that, as long as I don't sell the third CD. so applied to this issue, you have two copies of windows and create a third slightly different version from them, so long as your not giving away copies of it or selling it, but only telling people how to make their own I don't see a problem as Microsoft get paid and don't loose out.

a bit expensive though, if you only have a copy of Windows 8, and have to go out and buy a copy of Windows 7 to obtain the free games, lol

Sigh, expensive, yes. That was one of the nice things about getting MVP awards. Just about all MS software, along with many other companies, was free.

Yes it was! 10 free Win 7, Ultimate, Vista, XP codes can't hurt your feelings. Same with Office. ;) You might be a little surprised at the diversity of software that MS really puts together including robotics.

Let's see... Eset, Acronis, TechSmith (SnagIt & Camtasia), bunches of others for free.

Microsoft are fiercely protective of copyright.
What you do on your own computer I don't think it worries Microsoft.
The moment you post your "How To's" anywhere on the web you leave yourself open to litigation.
    If in doubt ask Microsoft.

You can get all Windows7 Games to play fine on Windows8.
    I won't post how.
Google and find out for yourself. :smile2:

Doing the manual Hex change got Win 7 Solitaire to work but nothing else would load, but that's the main one we wanted . I don't play many games myself, but my better half likes to keep her brain sort of occupied.
