    Hey guys.
I just got my other laptop fixed back up. it's a toshiba satelite that had win 7 on but after i upgraded it to 10 the head phones won't work when plugged in. they do work if i go in and select them but they don't work by just plugging them in. any ideas what could be wrong?

Hi Doug. What model Toshiba laptop do you have? it sounds to me like the auto-jack sensing isn't working as it should.

If it was working before in this fashion, if you had Windows 7/8.1 prior to upgrading to Windows 10, you may be missing the actual audio (looks like Conexant Audio Driver) here

    http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=2681454

The proper driver software may well be needed to trigger auto-jack sensing. This has been happening with Realtek Audio codecs when an upgrade to Windows 10 has been done but the needed realtek audio control software isn't installed. I see that it only goes up to Windows8.1 as far as support but it might work - many times Windows 8.1 drivers and software work fine on Windows 10. Worth a shot if you don't see that Conexant Audio sitting in your taskbar tray anywhere. In other words you may be using the default windows drivers therefore auto-jack sensing isn't working. Take a look and see if the Conexant Audio manager is installed. Let us know what your audio control interface looks like even take a screenshot if you can.

Hi Doug. Your Headphones need the green tick and set as default in image one, not your speakers.:)

Mine won't change automatically. I have to go into Audio properties each time and change manually.

Doug - was it ever different? Meaning with a previous windows install, or your original laptop configuration did it ever auto-detect the headphone jack properly when you plugged it in?

What do you mean when you put it back together? One thing you can so is go back to a previous system restore much like Windows 7 or 8. You might have to suffer a while but you can still use your headset obviously, and in the mean time post on the Toshiba website forums and see if anyone else has your issue with a Windows 10 upgrade with your specific model (or close). If I had this issue I would be patient about it because at least you can use your headset and it's a new operating system that your laptop does not officially support, it's just that you have to manually toggle the headset.

Here are the Toshiba forums, and since I have not worked on that model I cannot say for sure why your headset does not auto detect like it did before.

A few months ago it was stolen from me and someone broke it. it looked like he opened it and tried to snap the screen off by by bending it backwards. the battery was missing and the bottom case where the hinges attach was all busted up. so got new battery and new version case with the metal parts to make the hinge area stronger. all back together and working good.
thanks for the link. i'll check there and see if any one else has the same problem. in the mean time i'll try the other drivers on the Toshiba site. if that don,t work i'll just deal with it until a fix is found. i guess it just an inconvenience.
    thanks for your help guys.

You're always welcome Doug and feel free to post back when you get it resolved! Also remember while you are search for that answer you can look for a nice USB adapter/Sound solution updated for Windows 10 functionality to tide you over.

Hi doug! I have Toshiba lap top. I have never used the head phone jacks!
I'm sure you've been here, but thought I would add my 2 cents. Capture48.JPG

Thanks donetao but i looked there. the computer just don't switch to the head phones when i plug them in. it works when i select it so i'll just use it like that until i get it figured out. i'm going to the toshiba site later to see if any else is getting the same problem or it's just me. then i can go from there.

Your welcome! It was a shot in the dark. Computers will drive you to drink. I think I have found all of my Toshiba's little quarks, but you never know when another one will show up. Good luck with the Toshiba site. They don't impress me very much.;):(
PS From every thing I read on the Web, it sounds like a driver problem?? People are griping about W10 up dating the driver and causing problems. I would try uninstalling the driver in device manager and let windows find the driver??
Have you tried to reinstall the Realtec driver??

    Go to Device Manger
    Click Sound and audio devices
    Remove Current sound driver
Click Scan for hardware changes, it automatically installs Driver.

    Hi Doug. Try this.

Go to settings->audio->audio mode and set it to stereo.

    Tell us what happens.

well after about an hour with toshiba tech support. i went through 3 people and one even had remote control of my computer just for them to tell me that my warranty is past and they could help but because i don't want to pay for the help they can't help me. i wish i knew this before i upgraded but that's in retrospect. i'll try what you have suggested and report back.
