[Solved] Which version of Vista

I'm working to replace the failed hard drive on this Dell Inspiron 530 desktop.

Problem I'm having is that this came with 5 GB RAM and now has 6 GB RAM, which leads me to believe it is a 64-bit system. Additionally, the processor is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q660 @ 2.4 GHz which I believe is a 64-bit processor.

Customer gave me a Dell Vista 32-bit install disk.

So, was this a 32- or 64- bit system?

 

One way to tell, Tony is to input the service tag on the Dell drivers and downloads page. Do you have the service tag? It's usually located on the top of the tower.

 

If the computer actually came with 5 GB RAM initially, it stands to reason that it had a 64 bit OS. The problem is, in all the years I've worked with Dell, I've never seen or heard of a computer shipping with 5 GB's. (4, 6 or 8, yes.)

 

Thanks Cindy, The link I supplied has the service tag in it. It doesn't say which OS it came with.

I do stand corrected on the RAM. It came with and still has 6 GB (2 x 1 GB + 2x2 GB).

 

In that case, seeing that it came with 6 GB's I would have to assume that it originally shipped with Vista 64 bit. The link that you gave shows both 32 and 64 bit Vista OS.

Customer gave me an install disk for 32-bit. I have no reason to believe he gave me the wrong disk. Just can't believe the hardware is 64-bit ready and Dell sold him a 32-bit system.

btw: The COA doesn't mention 32- or 64- bit.

 

You don't have to worry about the COA anyway because it's a Dell. No activation is required.

 

I agree on that. Was just hoping the COA would give me a clue as to if this was 32- or 64- bit.

 

Since he has 6 GB of RAM, I would try and obtain a Dell 64 bit version of Vista or even 7 and install it. The Dell Vista drivers should be compatible with Windows 7. I've never really had a problem with them.
