This is a follow on Thread, from a point,BeeCeeBee made in another post.
What would you do with the Gitmo Detainees,if the facilty is closed?
Not all inmates have been tried and proven Guilty.
The time they have been there without Trial,is ridiculous,IMO.
One of our Guys was held for some years and released, without Trial.
The Judicial process is too long and very costly.
Unless there is strong evidence of Guilt,I would dump them back in their own Countries of Origin, and save the Taxpayers.
Any others with strong cases against them, moved to other facilities, and dealt with,Quickly.
Not sure but to hold someone for years without Trial, must go against the Geneva Convention.:)

That's a very difficult question to answer, and so many points of view to consider.

The first being my own... a location about 45 minutes away from me was/is being considered for a new "prison" for these people. That's a big fat NO THANK YOU!

Aside from that... well it's between a rock and a hard place. Do we put national security above moral obligation? If we "play fair" will we run the risk of letting loose some real threats to our country... and thus putting more lives at risk? Or do we play hard ball and violate all that this country was founded on? Imho... there is no real "win/win" answer to this issue.

Much of the answer lies with who the individuals are or are suspected of being.

Those who were caught on the battlefield shooting at our troops are lucky enough to be alive. Should they be kept forever, probably not if that is all they are but at least keep them until the shooting stops.

Those who are suspected of ties to al-qaeda or the taliban (lack of capital letters intentional) are somewhat different. Assuming that there is a modicum of reasonable intelligence supporting the allegation, I frankly do not care what happens to them.

I fully understand that does not square with a background that opposed the vietnam War as being ill conceived or, while an early supporter, came to realize that the Iraq war was an exercise in stupidity. Nonetheless, this relative handful of fanatics would kill my children if given the chance.

It would be sad if an innocent were caught up in this web (and it is inevitable that some will ) but it is just not worth the chance. I do agree that it is better to not send an innocent man to prison even if a guilty man is to be set free. In a world where thousands of lives are lost in Darfur and other places around the world. Where people live in fear of their own governments and religious leaders, I cannot lose sleep over a potential miscarriage of justice at Guantanimo.

My son was on the plaza of the World Trade Center on that morning and my daughter still has an invitation to a wedding that will never be.

We have rid ourselves of Dick Cheney so I am content at this point to let President Obama have a crack at getting the balance right.
