I have done that 7 (seven) (sieben) (siete) (sept) times, with the same
result each time. Do you think that perhaps an eighth time would work?
Insanity = doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different
result. It won't work for some of us, and just saying we don't know what
we are doing is getting to be a very tiresome reply. If you don't know,
can't help, just have to be sarcastic, please just sit down and shut up.

    It might be just you.
The popularity of XP is due to how well XP works and what runs on it. It
has nothing to do with Vista. Most people just won't upgrade unless there's
a need. If users need software which won't run on XP, they'll upgrade, but
for the most part that won't happen anytime soon.
Your problems with Vista, and with running this BETA program, could be any
number of things. For one, it could have something to do with running an
AMD versus an Intel chipset. I've always been a fan of AMD myself because
they've had better performing hardware at better prices, though I bought a
package system Dell Studio for my latest machine which is an Intel. The
biggest problem with Vista has been people trying to do more with it than
their system is capable of. How much RAM do you have? Do you use the aero
theme? What sort of programs have you crashed?

That is left up to you, there is no sarcasm involved in this help line.
Whatever is wrong at your end can have one or more of several reasons. It
shouldn't be directed at Vista without specific explanation of what exactly
    is causing it.
If the OS were that bad, no one would buy it. Plenty of people seem to like
it, because it works for them, only they don't raise cane about it.

I hate these short term offers. I bought a new PC this year sometime around
February-March with Vista at Best Buy. Then around June they start offering
Vista PCs with Windows 7 upgrade options so we don't get that, then MS
offers Windows 7 discounts and we can't afford it right now. I want to
consider upgrading to Windows 7 maybe next year and I want it cheap since I
    already have Vista.

Did you read the fine print? If you're running Vista, you should be able to
    run Windows 7.
"Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional packaged product includes both 32-
and 64-bit discs. Windows 7 is designed to run well on PCs that meet the
recommended system requirements for Windows Vista. If you're upgrading to
Windows Vista, please run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. And, before you
upgrade to Windows 7, be sure to compare your PC's specifications with the
    Windows 7 system requirements"

I have 2GB ram, 250 GH HD, 2.3 GZ dual AMD 64 processor. What crashes?
games, Office XP and 2007, Media Player, RealPlayer, and anything else I
ran on it. Likewise it would do a system reset on any program. And it is
NOT just me. I have talked to lots of people with the same problems and on
higher end computers than I have.

I only know a few people with Vista who are satisfied with it. It has lots
of nice features, but at the expense of stability and/or speed for most of
the people I have talked to. But it must just be them because YOU don't
have a problem with Vista. I don't deny that for some it is actually
working well. Too many people I have talked to that are satisfied with it.
Take a look at the registry. It is about 10x larger than in XP. It is SO
slow on anything other than a high end computer. Even then, for most I
have talked to, it is MUCH slower than XP. I'm glad you have no problems
with Vista. You are in the minority. Quit denying that MANY have major
problems with it and blaming the user for an unstable platform.

Looks like you and your friend are used to having the last word.
Well, the last word is that Vista works just fine at this end.
If I were you, I would ask for my money back, if everything really is as you
    say it is.

How do you ask for your money back from a manufacturer installed operating
system when there is only one operating system allowed by Microsoft? If I
had a choice I would have bought XP, but I had NO choices available except
a used computer with XP that was less than 1/2 the speed of this low end
new computer. I didn't have time to do any real shopping as I needed this
laptop for school after my last one died and was not worth rebuilding again
(hand-me-down from my son, and it survived nearly a year in Nigeria).

Now I am going to reveal my own story:
At the end of last year I bought my machine, with Vista Home Premium
installed, at a nearby computer show and as it later turned out it was a
year old model, even though new.
Starting out I had severe problems several times, with the latest one
leaving me with a black screen and the blinking cursor in the upper left
    corner.
I was ready to get an exchange or my money back while still under warranty,
when I contacted Dell, and they wanted to restore my system to factory
settings. I didn't like the idea of loosing everything I already had stored
on the computer and went ahead on my own, to try and fix it.
With the help of the disk(s) which came with the system, I let the Operating
System do the actual work and restore everything for me without loosing a
single data. There isn't room for details on how and I wouldn't remember
    anyway.
Ever since, which is over five months ago, it 'runs like an oiled machine',
    totally problem free.
For that reason alone I took a liking to it, since it is able to fix itself
    when making the right moves.
Whether any of this would apply to your situation, I do not know,
but you certainly have my sympathy.

    Harry.

Do you run aero? I hear that has major issues with low memory systems. 2
GB is considered low for Vista. I have 4 GB and mine runs fine.
How many games have you tried running on it? Do they all crash or just
    particular ones?
Do you have all the latest updates for Windows, and for Media Player and any
other software which crashed? I don't use Office XP, I use Open Office, but
I haven't had any issues with Media Player.
Have you tried compatibility mode options for any programs that crashed?

Mine was new in the box and I don't have any discs. My only option is to
return to ground zero and start from scratch (Vista is not available as a
stand-alone from then manufacturer) and will require buying a program all
over again as it is a single install. XP is MUCH faster and will readily
multitask. I can't say the same for Vista. You still ignore the multitude
of problems others are having with Vista. There are a LOT of people out
there with lots of nightmares. I had a program or two that Vista refused to
run, programs I depended on. If Vista would have run properly, I could have
lived with the slow OS. I am comfortable with W7, as my son has been beta
testing it on his computer and no real problems he couldn't fix. Vista,
not so. Which brings me back to the original post, which NOBODY has
addressed, how do I get the Advisor to work so I can check on any potential
    problems before pre-ordering W7?

There's always a choice. I bought mine from Best Buy and I believe all of
their machines had Vista on them, either Basic or Premium, but there were
plenty of new PCs on the internet for sale with XP installed.
Manufacturers don't install operating systems. If you mean retailer
installed operating system, you would have to contact them for a refund.
You could try asking Microsoft but most likely they'll refer you to whoever
    installed it.

W7 advisor is apparently made for PCs not running Vista. If you're running
Vista you shouldn't need it. You're supposed to assume it will work.

Damn, my computer must be defective (my main one) because it ran Vista
great with 2 gigs of ram, it wasn't constantly crashing and rebooting or
whatever. However, my motherboard croaked so I hope when I get the new
one its as equally defective because you make it sound like Vista is
garbage and doesn't work except for a few people. Therefore, when it
does work, there must be something wrong with the machine, at least
    according to you.

The key word in that sentence is "should." This is totally different from

I want to know about DRIVERS! That is the critical issue. I know my son had
some drivers that were a problem on Vista, but worked fine on W7. I know I
have enough speed/capacity, but I want to know about the other hardware.
Someone mentioned a problem with SATA HD's. I have a SATA HD.

What planet are you from? Compaq, the MANUFACTURER, installs Windows on
their machines. Dell, the MANUFACTURER, installs Windows on their machines.
Micro$$$$$$oft forbid the manufacturers from installing XP and demanded
that they only install Vista on their computers and even forbid them from
supporting XP downgrades. Yes, some OLDER and refurbished computers are
available on the internet with XP installed, but I did not have the time
available to search them out and wait for shipping. I had about 2 days to
locate and take possession of it to have time to get my critical programs
installed before school started. In my case, thanks to Micro$$$oft's
arrogance and greed and illegal market control, Compaq does NOT support XP
    on my laptop.

What planet are you from? The Dell here on earth will allow you to purchase
a computer with either Windows XP pre-installed or Downgrade Rights Service
    to Windows XP :)

and if you run something which says it WILL work, you believe it?
I expect it won't necessarily run on all of the hardware it's supposed to
when it's first released. If you want a guarantee wait a year or two, see
what others say, see if they release a service pack.

If it runs Vista, it should have working drivers in W7. With all new
releases if you want to be realistic, expect driver issues. Most likely all
hardware manufacturers which expect to be supported in W7 will be releasing
new drivers in the next year or two.

Dell is not a manufacturer. They're a retailer. Open your Dell PC and see
whos' name is on the hard drive. PC retailers assemble PCs from parts made
by manufacturers, and as is stated in the other response, Dell does offer
new PCs with XP installed. Check here:

I don't know of any physical Dell store, so I'm not sure if they could get
you a new system in 2 days. If we knew where you are we could check if
anyone in your immediate area offers new PCs with XP, but all you'd have to
do is grab a phone book and ask around. If you're saying you live in the
middle of nowhere with one PC store and they didn't offer any and you didn't
care to drive to somewhere that did, that's your problem. I don't think
it's MS' fault if your little PC store wants Vista to dominate the OS
market. I also wonder why a school would give you just 2 days to find and
setup a computer. Normally they can tell you months in advance what you'll
    need.
