You might want to investigate the free OpenOffice.org before you do that
    - it's a simple downloadable install of a product that is quite MS Office
compatible - and it does import/export MS Office files.

I ran OpenOffice on my development machine for a week. It couldn't do
the job and was weak. I got rid of it and went back to MS Office.

It DOES do the job, as long as you realise it's limitations, which mainly
are to do with opening complicatedly-formatted MS Office documents...

It didn't do the job I needed which was to do UML, which was forced upon
the developers because the Scrum Master didn't know how to use MS Office
effectively to do UML. I found out very quickly what a piece of junk
Openoffice was in this area, and I quickly kicked it to the curb.

That's a fairly specialised and not-very-common use for Office.....

So let it be written and so it NOT be done with OO.

But that's like saying: OO is better then Office 2003 because it publishes
    natively to PDF.
Yes of course there are differences in different applications.
For example, if in Windows you set in Regional settings that negative
numbers are bracketed, Lotus 123 will use that setting automatically,
bracketing a negative number with no further user action required. Does
Excel? No it doesn't - you STILL have to make a custom formatting.
So just saying "OO was weak and wouldn't do the job" WITHOUT the
qualification that you wouldn't have made unless I asked, is a bit devious
    to say the least.

Not for everyone, I guess - That's why I suggested the OP 'investigate'

You're beating a dead horse about this and it's moot man. OO cannot
touch MS Ofiice in the area of drawing UML charts and notations, which
was what I needed to do.

It allowed me to do and then it junked it up each and every time the
charts were saved and opened, as it did what it wanted to do in moving
things on the charts away from what I laid down and formatted.

Not so with MS Office, as it stayed the course and did what I told it to do.

You're typical COLA with trying to ram your take on things down other
    people's throats with excuses.

I'm not saying "use Open Office instead of MS Office"
What I AM saying is that your UNQUALIFIED original statement and I quote:
" I ran OpenOffice on my development machine for a week. It couldn't
do the job and was weak. I got rid of it and went back to MS Office."
is FUD. You made NO mention of the esoteric use you make of Office AT ALL.
If you are going to slag off an application then say WHY you find that it is
not suitable, not just that "it couldn't do the job". WHAT "job"?
    Do you get it NOW?
