I have a nasty virus on my computer and need a little assistance. It disabled McAfee so that I can not scan for it. I installed PC Doctor Virus Scan which found the trogan but when I click "fix" or "quaranteen" it shuts my computer down. Is there any way to find out the name of the virus so that I can come back and figure out how to get rid of it?

Re: Virus scan shuts down computer

You really need to be doing anything related to Virus's in safe mode for a start, if the PC is shutting down its not likely to be the Virus but the PC shutting itself down to protect itself.
from within safe mode McAfee should run

just tried that. McAfee wont run. Checked McAfee tech support and the scan on McAfee says there is no problem w/McAfee software. In safe mode, I ran spyware doctor antivirus and came up with two trogans. When I hit "fix", my computer shut down and I got an MSDOS screen that says the computer is shutting itself down to protect it from damage

    Hi Moonncat

You say you have run some Virus scans, have you run any anti malware scans?

Try this and let me know the results:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

It'll be interesting to see if this scan runs.
Let me know how it goes and post the report back here ( if it runs) and then i'll have a better idea of what's going on.

if you get no joy from MBAM :

    Try this......

Download RootRepeal from one of the following locations:Unzip it to your Desktop.
    • Double click RootRepeal.exe to start the program
    • Click on the Report tab at the bottom of the program window
    • Click the Scan button
    • In the Select Scan dialog, check:

      • [*]Drivers
        [*]Processes
        [*]SSDT
        [*]Hidden Services
    • Click the OK button
    • In the next dialog, select all drives showing
    • Click OK to start the scan
Note: The scan should not take very long. DO NOT run any other programs while the scan is running
    • When the scan is complete, the Save Report button will become available
    • Click this and save the report to your Desktop as RootRepeal.txt
    • Go to File, then Exit to close the program
Please copy and paste the report into your topic.

    Thanks.

Re: Virus scan shuts down computer

    Thank you for helping!
I downloaded MBAM and got the updated (automatically updated). I hit full scan and it disappeared from my screen. I double clicked on the application from the desk top and got the same error message that I get when trying to open Internet Explorer. (I use firefox now because whatever is going on with my computer wont let me access IE) Error message is this: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access them." I reinstalled MBAM on Drive D instead of C and tried the scan again. Same thing...

    Peculiar huh?

    Going for rootrepeal now.

If this is not resolved on the next reply or two by Starbuck, it probably should be moved to the malware removal forum.

I'm already beginning to get an idea of what is going on....... not from what is happening, but from what is Not happening. (if that makes sense).

I agree that this thread should be moved, to safeguard any other reply's from confusing the issue.

    Hi Moonncat

Did you manage to run the 'RootRepeal' program?

if you have problems running 'RootRepeal' , try this:

Download SysProt Antirootkit from the link below (you will find it at the bottom of the page under attachments, or you can get it from one of the mirrors).

SysProt AntiRootkit - Download Page (SysProt AntiRootkit)

Unzip it into a folder on your desktop.

    Start the Sysprot.exe program.
    • Click on the Log tab.
    • In the Write to log box select all items.
    • Click on the Create Log button on the bottom right.
    • After a few seconds a new Window should appear.
    • Make sure Scan all drives is selected and click on the Start button.
    • When it is complete a new Window will appear to indicate that the scan is finished.
    • The log will be created and saved automatically in the same folder. Open the text file and copy/paste the log here.

I couldn't get root repeal to work but the other program you suggested worked fine. Here's the log. Does it have any important info in it?

Re: Virus scan shuts down computer

    Hi Moonncat

I saw your other thread about reinstalling your operating system.
    I can understand your frustration.
If we don't sort this out fairly quickly and you feel, that's the way you want to go.... i'll explain the process to you.
Let's see if we can uncover anything first:
We normally leave this program until later.... but let's use the big gun first.

    Step 1
Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with the running of ComboFix.
      For more information read:
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

      Then:

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

If running Vista you may not see this screen, so just continue.
    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

    Step 2
    • Download OTL to your desktop.
    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    .
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them with your next reply.

In your next reply, please submit:
    ComboFix.txt
    and both reports from OTl.

    Thanks.

I appreciate all your help! I got "pissy" and was able to delete my OS and reinstall. It just finished and I installed McAfee and ran a scan and it shows all clear. I'm searching for a good malware preventer now.

Ok, so you have now reinstalled the OS?
That's not a problem, glad you informed me.

Try one or both of these.
The free versions are 'On Demand' ... which means you have to run them yourself. (one at a time though [IMG] )
As you have reinstalled, you should be nice and clear of any malware.

I'll give you the full instructions, so that you have all of the information:

    • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
    • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.

      • Close browsers before scanning.
      • Scan for tracking cookies.
      • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
    • Do not run a scan just yet.
Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

    * Restart your computer
    * After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    * Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
You will need to use the 'keyboard arrow keys' to navigate on this menu.
    * Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    * Then choose your usual account.

    Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
    • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
    • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
    • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
    • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
    • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
    • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
    • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
      • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
      • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
      • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
      • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
    • Click Close to exit the program.

These are normal canned speeches, so they actually ask for the reports to be submitted..... it's entirely up to you if you want to post any findings though.

Remember to update the definitions for each program prior to running a scan.
