If I want to turn my router off during storms do I just unplug the power cord and plug it back in later or is it more complicated than that?

You can certainty do just that. Unplug the power cord and plug it back in later on. It will take a few minutes for the router to restart. You won't lose any settings. You won't have to do anything else. When unplugging the power, it's best to unplug the power adapter at the electrical outlet.

During storms, I also unplug my TV, microwave oven, and refrigerator. I turn the off the thermostat for my air conditioner.
