How would I go about upgrading my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10? I never did this. Is it easy to do? Or recommended?

It was easy a few years ago when Microsoft was pushing out the upgrade. It’s not that easy not, but can still do it now by using the Windows Media Creation tool https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

I’ve always used a USB flash drive to create the install media. You can also use a DVD.

I have had this computer a long time but this is the message I am getting from Google (see uploaded file below). Do you really think this is worth the trouble and expense of upgrading? I am happy the way it is without having to learn a whole new system. What is your opinion?

It just says Google will not be updating Chrome for Windows 7.

If you're connected to the Internet and you're concerned about security you should upgrade to Windows 10.

Chrome will no longer be getting security updates for Windows 7 in Feb. 2023.
The only browser that will support Windows 7 a bit longer is Firefox. It isn't clear when they will stop issuing security updates. I've read June, July or August. Only time will tell which is accurate.

If you run good security programs, scan with malwarebytes free, don't click on links in emails and are careful about what you download, you will be okay on Windows 7. Since Windows 7 support ended close to 3 years ago, there are very few additional programs that you need. Stay away from free programs. If you need a program to do something, ask for advice on what to download before you download anything.

My husband has been running a very old version of Palemoon (I think v 27 from 2016) simply because it is faster on his laptop than Firefox. The computer gets scanned weekly with Malwarebytes and MS Security Essentials. Nothing has showed up since the computer was new in 2011. He doesn't click anything! If he isn't sure, he tells me to look at something - again - he doesn't click.

I still have Firefox and it still works, and it IS up to date, but I had forgotten that all my changed passwords were likely saved by Google and not Firefox so they would not work. After changing back to Google as my default browser I realized the likely reason. No more time to fool with this now. I made screen shots of my passwords and will likely print them so if I nee one while using Firefox or other than Google they might work. Also if I take screen shots of the Firefox passwords then I will see what is different. Will work on that later. Meanwhile, thanks for the tips. BG.

I never had a computer and upgraded the OS but always just bought another computer. My brother HAS upgraded but does not recall if it was costly or if any cost was involved. I was wondering if it costs anything, a little, or a lot to upgraade to a newer OS and how to do it if I chose to do so.

You'll have to check with your computer shop. We can't give you an estimate here. It would be less costly to upgrade than to purchase a new computer.

    Notes:
We don't know if your computer has the hardware needed to upgrade the OS.
Your hard drive is probably over 5 years old which makes it more likely to fail than a new drive. Hope you have everything backed up.
A new computer will most likely be faster than the one you have.
