How would I go about updating Photo Gallery or finding out if it needs updating? I do not ever recall being reminded or asked to update it.
In fact, I do not recall ever getting it or signing up for it. I do not know where it came from. It does not recognize my email address. am never reminded or asked to update it it.

Windows Photo Gallery has been discontinued and Microsoft no longer offers support for it.

Are you talking about Windows Photo Viewer or something else?

I think Barry above has answered this question. That would explain why I cannot update and do not receive any offers to update it. Some files it does and others it does not open.

You set Windows Photo Viewer to the types of files you wish to open with it.

I use IrfanView and prefer to open jpg files with that instead of the photo viewer.

What file types will not open
    ?

If I right click a jpg file, I can choose to open it with a) a browser b) IrfanView c) Photo Viewer d) Paint e) my installed PDF viewer.

I do not recall where PhotoGallery even came from. I sullose I must have downloaded it awhile back. I use FSCapture to capture an image(see example) and it saves as photogallery image. I just know how to use it - have forgotten the details of it.

It is not Photo Gallery. It is Photo Viewer and it is part of Windows 7. That's why the full title is Windows Photo Viewer.

I asked before but you never answered the question: Are you talking about Windows Live Photo Gallery???
If so, it was something downloaded part of Windows essential suite.

end of support in January 2017.

I apologize for not anwering but I guess it must have come with the laptop for do no recall installing it. Also recall no update offers like with everything else.
If I look in the programs list I see XPS Viewer and Photo Gallery. Unsure how to tell or describe what they are. I also see a Window Photo Viewer. the only one I use a lot is called Photo Gallery. The things I use I really know nothing about except that I know how to use them. The one I am using is likely Windows Live photo Gallery only it just says Photo Gallery. I see nothing named Windows Photo Viewer anywhere.

    and
    You are contradicting yourself.
It will not be listed in your list of programs, if that's where you were looking. The only way to use it, is to right click an image file (jpg, bmp, tiff) and select "open with" and choose Windows Photo Vioewer.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Photo_Viewer

XPS Viewer is for "View, digitally sign and set permissions for XPS documents". Since i have never used an XPS document, I don't think I've ever used this. XPS, I suspect, is MS's attempt to use something other than pdf. Since pdf is so widespread, I don't think XPS caught on with a large number of users.

Photo Gallery was installed by you. I don't have it in my list of programs because I never installed Windows Live Essential Suite.

I haven't a clue what Free File Viewer is.
It could be the 3rd program mentioned in this list of 8 or it could be something completely different.
    https://listoffreeware.com/free-universal-file-viewer-software-windows/

When you only have 1 choice when you right click and select open with, then you select choose default program.
A box will open and at the lower right, there is a browse button. Click that.
