You can try quitting all your apps. To do that, go to the home screen and double click the Home button. You'll see all the apps running. Flick them up and off the screen.

Then power down the iPad by holding the power button until you see the notice to power it down. Swipe it to the left to initiate the shut down. Then restart your iPad by holding the power button until the Apple logo shows up. It'll take longer than you're used to to get to the home screen.

    Try to install the updates.

Sorry, my bad - yes swipe right to shut down.

Were you able to quit all the apps?

The only other thing I can think of is to uninstall the apps that won't update and then try to download them again. The updated apps will download. However, if you have user IDs and passwords stored in the apps, you will have to re-enter them once you download the new apps.

Then you also risk not being able to download the new apps - still. So you'll be stuck without the app totally.

If things are working, I wouldn't mess with it. I've found that most times when I install an updated app it just comes with more advertisements. I have an older iPad 2 that I keep in the TV area because it has an old version of the TV Guide app which has no advertisements. The same app on my newer iPad is full of them. Also Facebook has always been buggy on iPads for some reason.

You might also want to check the free space on the iPad.

Had similar issue installing an application it was due to lack of space to carry the download plus what it needed to compress and install.
