Updates for WD coming in two's

Discussion in 'Windows Update' started by Karyn C, Oct 20, 2009.

I am wondering if my Windows Update is malfunctioning or if recent updates
are being issued as two updates with the same number. This happened 10-15
    with KB915597 (Def. 1.67.841.0), and 10-19 with KB915597 (Def. 1.67.940.0).
Also once before on 10-02 with KB915597 (Def. 1.67.321.0). All came in
    consecutive two's.

I have followed the help and info links found by r-clicking the update to no
avail. Other kinds of updates have installed successfully (just one)
between these. Is there a way I can find out if there are supposed to be
two updates with the same no., or if my WU is overloading me?

I have Vista 32 bit w/ SP2, running Norton 360 and WD. (One anti-virus, one
    firewall: Norton)

Thank-you in advance for a response.
    K.C.

    K.C.,

It appears that Norton 360 has an anti-spyware component, PC security,
    according to Symantec:

" PC security defends against viruses, spyware, botnets, and more.
Protects your computer and all your online activities. "
Further down the page it states N360 has " Automated antivirus and
    antispyware "

That means that when it was installed, Windows Defender *should* have
been disabled during it's installation as running 2 anti-spyware
programs concurrently that monitor the sysem with *real time protection*
    will cause conflict issues.
IF one of the anti-spyware programs does *not* monitor the system with
real time protection, then conflict issues will not occur.

    Real-time protection

    Windows Defender: Real-Time Protection

Examples of anti-spyware programs that can be configured to not use any
real time protection at all or do not contain real time protection are:

AdAware (free version has no real time protection)
Spybot Search and Destroy (free version has no real time protection)
a-squared Free (offers no real time protection)

Either disable Norton 360's anti-spwyare component, uninstall Norton 360
when the subscription expires and obtain an antivirus program that does
not include an anti-spyware component, or, if you intend on keeping
N360, disable Windows Defender as an Automatically started service from
within the Services console. ( Click the Start orb, in the Start Search
    filed type in
    services.msc
    Under Programs, click on services.msc
When the UAC prompt comes up, enter a password if one is used and click
the Continue button or, if no password is used, click the Continue button. )
Or, just *right* click the Computer icon on the Desktop or Start menu
and choose 'Manage'. Go through the UAC prompt
In the middle frame double left click Services and Application.
    Double left click on Services.
Scroll down the Windows Defender, double left click it.
Set the Startup type to Disabled.
    Click Apply, click OK.
Close the Services console or the Computer Management console.
Which console is open depends on which method you used to access Services.

Open Notepad, then copy-and-paste the following:

    qfecheck.exe /l:C:\ /v
    @echo.
    @echo.
    @echo.
    @pause

Next, click File, Save As: change the dialog box from "text files" to "all
files" - then save this onto your desktop as "qfecheck.bat" -- close Notepad,
and doubleclick on the .bat file you just saved on your desktop -- that will
check all the hotfixes on your system and suggest solutions if it finds any
problems. You can also download and install Belarc Advisor:

to get helpful information on the hotfixes successfully installed, and if
there are ones which do not validate, Belarc will indicate those with a red
'X' and provide helpful links to click on to get support information. HTH
    and good luck ..

In response to MowGreen's post: Thank-you for the advice. I wasn't aware of
the "real-time protection" problem. Thought it was OK to run several malware
programs at once. And since I updated my Norton, they seemed to be getting
along better. Norton used to turn off WD every time I restarted my computer.
So I have disabled and stopped the WD service. You didn't say whether to
stop the service, just disable at startup. The service was started, so I
stopped it before apply and OK. Hope that's right.
Now I have a notification icon with an exclamation point on it showing WD
isn't running. Somehow I thought it might interfere with getting updates to
turn off WD. Not sure why I think that. Is it true?
I would think that Help and Support would cover this since my computer came
with both Norton and WD on it. No one said they couldn't run together.
Actually, they have been running together since I've had this computer,
12-08. I don't feel good about turning off WD, but if you think it's best,
    I'll leave it off.

Thank-you for the advice. I tried running the qfecheck.bat file from my
desktop and command prompt said it didn't recognize this type of file or
something to that effect. It called it qfecheck.exe even though I saved it
as .bat. One thing you left out was type of encoding. ANSI was in the box,
so I left it, didn't know what else to select. Could that be the problem?
Also, I checked out the Belarc page. May do that tomorrow. Thanks again.

    Karyn,

Before you disable the Windows Defender service, open the Security
    Center in Control Panel.
Does 'Malware protection' show as on ?
Now click the down arrow next to 'Malware protection '.
Under 'Spyware and other malware protection' click the 'Show me the
antispyware programs on this computer' link.
A window will open and list the 'installed spyware protection programs'
    What's listed there ?
Now look under 'Virus protection'. Is Norton 360 listed ?

Disabling Windows Defender has *no* effect on updating.
*IF* Security Center is showing as off for 'Spyware and other malware
protection', according to the Vista Help files, you should be able to
click on a 'Show me my available options' link and in the Security
Center dialog box choose " I have an antispyware program that I'll
    monitor myself ".

Is this the latest version of Norton 360 or a previous one ?

Security Center shows all green dots. For Malware, it shows Norton 360 and
WD but WD is off, (same for firewall). Norton is shown as virus protection.
I have updated this version of Norton in August, I think, installed it in
Feb. this year. I think there is a newer version called 2010, out in the
    last month or so.

Then everything is as it should be. WD is disabled and N360 is
monitoring the system against spyware *and* viruses/trojans/etc.

I came up with a different solution before this post was up. It gets rid of
that annoying icon in the notification area at least. Went back to services
and made WD a manual startup, not disabled, and turned off the real time
protection in WD tools options. That way I can still manually run a WD quick
scan, but the real time protection conflict is resolved. I hope everything
is still "as it should be". KC
