update "issues"

i know little to nothing, technically, regards these update problems, but
common sense wise, i would ask that anyone having a similar issue w/october's
updates, who has seen it to seemingly "resolve itself", after doing battle
w/it for a time, and apparently "in spite of" those efforts, to report as
such, here.....because it appears to me to be an MS (make stupid) server
issue or something similar (their fault), that consequently, given enough
time, fixes itself. such was the case for me. i worked on it & tried every
posted "fix", to no avail, until all of a sudden, yest., when i was not
working on it, i noticed the icon finally went away & upon further checking,
found that all was now as it should be. what i'm not positive about is
whether or not it is actually necessary to actually use the "add/remove"
function on any update that is listed there, but not properly set yet.

therefore, my advice would be that if after trying a few of these "fixes",
then just "give it a day or 2", then remove any faulty updates showing in
your programs, then see if a resolution has come.

this could save folks alot of time & agrav. yes o?.........

    hmmmm.....no replies so far....

does this mean that no one else, with this update issue, has seen it
"self-resolve", after some time has passed?

    Hi nowurtalkin,

The exact same thing happend to me, I kept updating, and it kept saying
failed. I finally thought: forget it, I can't do anymore. But I have been
concerned that my computer may go south, or be at risk to do so. Like you (as
I have said different ways in these posts) I also know next to nothing
technology wise. So you mentioned that since this is obviously MS problem,
(which has become all of ours) that it should "fix it self". Mine hasn't yet,
I have had this problem since Sat. 10/16, but I can be patient and wait,
hope and see. I just have one question. How does one "remove the faulty
udates" in my programs if it does go away on it's own? I have no idea, how to
do that. When I go into the control panel I have nothing that says
"Add/Remove". All I have is a category that says "Add Hardware, and if I
click on that, no "remove" anything. I don't even know how to get to
programs. Ok, I admit, I am computer stupid, could you just tell me how to do
that, plainly, no computer jargon and step by step. Thank you!!

    hi tracylee,

i am suggesting that due to what happened in my case, and to the fact that
it "appears to me" to be a microsoft issue (maybe a bug..maybe overloaded
servers, etc.?) & to the also observed fact that many people having this or a
similar "issue w/updates" are not being able to correct with the various
"fixes" that have been posted....that at least in some cases maybe they have
to wait for ms to to fix something in the process or maybe the servers need
time to "catch up"?? but i think that any installations that may have taken
place in a faulty or incomplete way, need to be removed. i base that on the
fact that many folks have reported that 1 or more of the recent updates seem
to have downloaded & installed (are listed in the windows programs list) but
they keep getting alerted that same updates need to get installed (a
contradiction)...but all the "fixes" so far posted, agree that those (faulty)
    updates need to be uninstalled.

i don't know what os you have & i only know about mine (xp pro, sp3), but i
don't understand why you don't see any "add/remove programs" in your control
panel. in mine, it's right next to (to the right of) "add hardware". please
give it another look/see, for that or something similar..? if you still
cannot see it there, let me know what your os is & i'll try to help you
figure out where it is, unless someone else more knowledgeable jumps in.
(maybe it's possible to have that (add/remove programs) directory "hidden" by
choice?? in the control panel of your particular os, just like you can choose
to not list the updates in that directory. also, once that part is figured
out, perhaps you may want to try 1 of the fixes that've been posted here in
this thread. 1 in particular, near the beginning of the thread, worked for
    several people.

also, what happens when you go to the ms update page? does it check your
machine & list updates needing to be installed?

    hi,
i see you haven't replied to my last attempt to help...but in case you come
back & still need help w/this issue, after further investigating, i want to
reinterate & be clear that you definitely should find & remove any update
that appears to be a faulty install...and...to maybe answer my own question
re: you could not find "add/remove programs"...and how i thought that might
be due to you having a different OS than i....well, i've become convinced you
must have vista....and if so, that explains it, as it is listed differently.
you must go to: control panel>programs and features (in classic view[should
be about 5 rows down]) , or, programs (if not classic view)>then uninstall
    link is underneath that.

    Hi nowurtalkin,
Sorry, got home a bit ago, (10/18/09 @ 5:30 pm PST)-and turned on the
    computer, ( & yes, still states I need updates). When I said I don't
understand computer jargon, truly I do not. I don't know what "OS" means. I
consider my self realitively intelligent, but absolutery ignorant when it
comes to computers. I do have Vista, home premium, sp2. Is that my "os"? My
brother, who gave me this laptop aa little over a yr. ago, pretty much
installed or had it installed everthing on it, so what is set up is set up by
him. He is not that availbale to talk to now. So....

I did as you suggested. I went into control panel, ( I do have it in classic
view) and clicked on Programs and Features. Now, all the prog. & Feat. are
lised alphebetically . Do I uninstall one of those.

Now, when I webt to Windows Update, I checked and my settings are on
Automatic updates. I also clicked on check for updates and again it said I
have "4 imporant updated to be installed" or my computer may be "vulnerable
to outside attack". But finally, I saw where it said under View Update
History, a little sentence that states "to remove an update see: installed
updates" in blue. I clicked on that. I saw only one of the updates that kept
failing and it was "Security Update for 2007 microsoft office systems" dated
10/16/09 (when this whole mess started, for me at least). So I removed that.
I did not see the other 3 updates listed which I found interesting, I wanted
to remove those too. Now if I have to reinstall, not sure how to to do that.
I am going to send this to you and reboot now. So maybe, just maybe, that
will do the trick, or as other threads ( is that what a "thread" is, when
people like you and me respond to each other?). I may have to do it a couple
of times. I will let you know. If not, then I don' t know what else to do. I
am sure you are thinking "What am I computer and it's jargon 101?"

One would think, that MS would monitor these "threads" and see that there
is a major probleme with these latest updates, and ntfy us all somehow. ( Or
am I really to naive?) So again, I will let you know if it worked. You said
yours did after a couple of days. Thank you for your instructions, because I
literally need things spelled out, they were simple ("go to control panel,
click on"...) and so on. But again, what is OS? After I have rebooted, I will
check later to see if you saw this and replied. Thanks for trying to help
me, and if you see this, helping me again. (Sorry this is so long)

Microsoft don't monitor this newsgroup. But they do monitor the phone call volume.

If the updates that are failing are security updates, and depending on which
part of the world you are in, Microsoft provide free phone support. Try this
    web site:

    <https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/>

yes, "OS" means operating system, which you seem to have sensed anyway,
reading your post. i figured out ahead of time that you must have vista
(which i don't & is different than my xp pro) because when you said you
couldn't see any "add/remove" element, so i then did a search for same, in
vista, and learned that indeed it's diff. in vista. so i see you then found
the programs/updates/and uninstall abilities. at that point i guess the idea
is to look there for any "installed" updates that also are coming up
continually in your automatic updates thingy, because obviously, if you are
seeing both (like so many other folks are also) hence the contradiction...one
of them is reporting wrongly. but anyway, idea is to find those listed in the
program list & then, using the remove tool or checkbox or button or whatever
it is there, to remove.....and then!.....various options for reinstalling,
either in a different manner, or from a different location, or utilizing some
other various & sundry "fix" (many have been shown, detailed & suggested here
in these posts), can then be attempted, until viola!!...you find the right
one! (i.e. MS watching all the suffering little fish flopping around in the
net, watching to see which & how many "lucky ones" will manage to "flop out"
of the net....to once again "go swimming"...oh...i digress....so anyway i
noticed in another post that you have got it working! yeah! (maybe...) haha.

whoops...i forgot to try to answer you re: how to reinstall now..
well 1st, if you indeed have corrected the issue, then the question is: is
your automatic updates notifying you still that there are updates for you to
download and/or install? if so, you can try doing it via the route offered
there, same as i imagine you did in the 1st place (unless you have config'd
to do it all totally automatically, with no input from you). if you really
"fixed" something, then perhaps 1 of those 2 processes will complete as
desired. but if there's still an issue residing, then you'll wind up with the
same vicious cycle, except now you know some stuff to allow you to
"stop/remove/try different approach, etc."....this because you had
perseverence? they say "you need to have 'alot of patient's' (patience) to be
    a good doctor!.....(who said that??...probably MS)

anyway, i'm hoping my comments....may help someone to at least hang in and
keep trying some of this stuff, or maybe help them understand some element of
these different processes.....i mean after all.....2 relative computer
dummies like us.....have managed to "git 'er done"!.....while many others are
still waging war with it. by the way, you may have noticed, that this thread
is nearly 900 pages long, about "problems with windows updates" only (or
    mostly)...and....goes back 5 1/2 years...to 2004!

hope you have at least "5 minutes of a good working machine"....until the
    next one...

Ah "Operating System". Thank you! Well at my last post, I thought I did, but
the evil little thing came back. But.... now is all fixed. This is what I
did, but may not have anything to do w/fix. I remember my brother telling me
I can restore at most any point my system. So I typed in "restore" had it go
back to the Oct. 4th. Now at first seemed to clear it up, but then in a few
minutes the little gremlin(s) returned. So I thought, ok that's it, I am
done. I did go into MS Support, and found an actual phone #. Then while
poking around saw a where I can email an "engineer" to email back in one
buisness day. Ok, did that, reported issue, said hey MS engineer person, can
you not see that this is somewhat of an issue here? (By the way, I liked your
analogy of flopping fish in a net, very good). I then took advantage of a
diagnostic tool and ran that to be reptd. to MS.

So was about to shut down for the night in frustration as all heck, when I
decided to click on the little update gremlin one more time. Well, now it
said 7 updates needed. I thought maybe because I had restrd computer back to
10.07.09. (probably had nothing do with it, but I will stick with the
fantasy I actually knew what I was doing ;-} ). Anyway, clicked on gremlin
said, sure go head update, or don't, see if I care. Well..... it did. Update
I mean, successfully. It then made me do 2 more updates that were
"recomended": some junk mail filter and a "culmative udate for media center".
So now before I sent this, I just now clicked again on Start and Windows
update and.... it still shows everything successful.... Oh, almost forgot,
when I saw the 7 updates, there was something to click on I think of some
    kind of report,
(yes I wrote it down obviously) and there was a report about how there has
been a big tadoo (sp?) about security or something like that. So should
update. As said I did and it seems to be working. I don't know if the others
saw that or not, but I can't seem to make a new thread, ( I have learned 2
phrases here "OS" & "thread", I am very proud of myself, thanks to you).
Anyway not sure how to let others know to try again. Perhaps you can in
    giving the above address?

Thank you again. You were more help than you know. Tracy
(just chkd Update again, still green and good. Ok maybe I am a little OCD)

    TracyLee Guest

Well so far so good, (checked again) so again I say thank you to you, and
    thank you Lord!.

I do have it set to install updates automatically everyday @ 9 pm....but it
still aks me to click install when they show up. Especailly if when I shut
down, so I don't know why I have to do that if they are supposed to do it
automatically. I also have set to ask me if I want optional or recommended
updates and to ntfy me of new software. Why the last part I don't know, it is
not as if I would understand new software eh? Anyway, as I said, so far so
good. When I restored computer and then reinstalled new updates, I did a
couple more (did I tell you that?). It does say when check "No new important
updates to install". Ms did email me and said they received my inquiry, and I
am sure I am not the only one. They also said an engineer would email within
24 hrs. I hope, truly hope this is. But I know enough that in computer world,
that ain't gonna be so. (my mother would have killed me with that grammar,
    but felt good).

I new this thread was long, but 900 pgs. Good grief! And over 5 yrs. I still
wonder if I should get a Mac next time. My brother swears by them (even
though he gave this PC). But I guess I better shut up and be grateful for
what I have. Yes, I do believe you have helped others, and if they skip pass
my boring tantrums, and read yours, they will hang in there. I did reply to
someone else and gave the MS bulletin website I gave you. Oh, I also notice I
gave the last part wrong. (although you probably already know this, but just
in case)-after "bulletin/" (with out the quote marks) is should be
ms09-54.mspx. You can just type .mspx after bulletin too and get same results

Thank you again nowurtalkin, you have been wonderful. I have enjoyed
learning, and you have been patient w/me. Maybe one day this old "boomer"
lady will actually know something about how to manage her computer. Tracy

    TracyLee Guest

Thank your Harry Johnston (MVP) for the website, I put in in my favorites.

Ok, now if you have read the rest of my posts here in this thread
w/"nowurtalkin" you know I am not a computer person (always willing to lean
all that I can though). When I clicked on the website you provide, and then
clicked on everything I could (i.e. Support, Home, etc and their drop down
menus), and even in "Contact Us", I found no actual ph# to contact Microsoft
and actually speak to a person. Am I blind to something? I would think
(again, maybe be naive) that somewhere especially on the contact us page a
1-800 or some ph # would be there.

I understand they (MS) prefer online support, but a phone # would help.
Especially since you said they monitor phone call volume and also provide
free phone support. So what am I missing or not clicking on? Maybe and
probably is right in front of me and I am just not seeing it.

I do want to say I am so far as I said to nowurtalkin, so far so good as far
as the problem I had. Thank the Lord, my Windows Update is running fine.

Thanks again for the website. TracyLee

When I go to that website and click on "Security Updates are not successfully

when I push continue, I'm asked which country I am in; when I select United
States I get a page titled "Select the type of support ..." which has an option
    for Phone Support.
