You still haven't done a sufficient diagnosis IMO.
By installing it manually you should be completely independent of the WU/AU
distribution machinery. So you should be looking for alternate diagnostics
(e.g. install log and verbose install log) from that. If you can't figure out the
names of such diagnostics using simpler tools such as File Search (e.g. search
for files changed on the day the update was run and then sort by timestamp),
then you could use ProcMon to find them.

    QED. ; )

BTW this was written before trying to do any further analysis on
your WU/AU log. If I see anything new or interesting in it I'll
comment further later. For now I strongly urge you (again) to try
to find *alternate* diagnostics for your install attempts.

    Good luck

I have tried to post a ticket on support.microsoft.com, as you suggest, but
it doesn't work and implies that I should try data. However, I have been
trying for quite some time - before your reply.

    Is there a UK equivalent?

I will, of course, look at your other suggestions.

That might be analogous to a /quiet option. E.g. do the install under a non-admin
account, notify the admin and do the final (copy) phase later. Again, I would expect
to see some better clues for this in an _install_ log, not the WU/AU log.

One of the biggest deficiencies in both the WU/AU log and the various update install logs
IMO is that there is no record of whether the boot copy worked. What I have suggested
installers could try to confirm this phase is:
    1. check if boot-time copying is required. E.g. look in the update's install log
or look in the Event log (e.g. using the Event Viewer)
    2. If it is, before booting look in the registry for the list of modules to be copied
    and their respective targets: PendingFileRenameOperations
    3. Capture that list. (It will disappear during the boot.) And use it to check
the current versions and properties of the modules involved. E.g. use filever
    to expedite this task.
    4. Do the boot. (One question I have always had but never had the courage
or necessity to check, is if a safe mode boot would achieve the same copying?
Then I think that I would do that instead of allowing potential interferers to be
started at the same time.) A possible diagnostic for this step would be ProcMon's
    Boot Logging option.
    5. (Post boot:) Use the list of modules captured in step 3 to repeat those checks.
If a target now doesn't have the same attributes that the source had
you would have an explanation for why an update keeps being reoffered.

    Hi Robert,

I've managed to post this problem with Microsoft Support, which has taken a
series of diagnostics automatically. I think I've reached the end of my
personal technical skill with regard to this problem, being a Novell guy with
no real training in advanced MS diagnostics.

Frankly it would be a lot easier to diagnose if there was a meaningful
explanation of the error code. Unfortunately that's not the case.

Thaniks for your, and everyone elses help and if anyone thinks they can shed
any further light on the problem then please do.

If anyone would like any further information, then please leave a message
for me on my website - there is a contact link
leading to an email form there.

    Thanks again, Rob

Thanks - what I meant to say was that the MS site was giving me an error
when trying to submit said form.

I tried again, much later, and it worked okay.

Still waiting for a response from MS though.

    Hey

I'm having problems getting updates via Windows Update (WU) on Vista
    Buisness 64bit edition
When trying to install SP1(KB936330) for Vista 64bit i get the
80070057-error, but i've also gotten the error before. After a fresh
install (no additional programs installed) of Vista Buisness 64bit I
    run WU.
It finds a load of available updates, and after trying to install all
the "important"-ones, i usually get the report saying that, normally,
half of them were succesfully installed, and the rest failed.

I repeat the procedure until I've only got 1 update left, wich is
usually "Cumulative Security Update for Windows 64bit edition"
(KB947864). After approx. 3 tries, I try to manually install the
    update, wich doesn't work either
(The error is "The update does not apply to your system"). So, if I'm
lucky, i get a successful update after roughly 12 tries. This only
results in me getting the ecactly same errors with SP1(KB936330). But
this wont just "luckily" install after trying numerous times. I'm
    totally stuck.

Here is a list of the things I've already tried:
    Reinstall a fresh Vista 64
Reinstall a fresh Vista 64 with another CD
Reinstall a fresh Vista 32, wich is working perfectly!
The upgrade function from the Vista-CD
Downloading and installing SP1 manually (stops midway in the
installation and closes the installer and gives no feedback)
Downloading and installing other updates manually (error when executing
the files, saying "The update does not apply to your system")

Reinstall a fresh Vista 64 and then trying to install SP1 manually
    Get an error saying:
"An internal error occured while installing the service pack
    Error code 0x80091007 See
    for details"

It's also worth mentioning that during all my tries, apart from the
first one, I haven't installed any other program before running WU.

My computer have the follwing specs:
    Tower: Antec Performance One P182
    Mainboard: MSI P35 Platinum
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz Bulk (LGA775)
CPU-cooler: Scythe Scythe Ninja PLUS Rev. B, without fan
    Harddrive: Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM
    Harddrive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 160GB S-ATA 8MB cache 7200RPM NCQ
Graphics: Point of View GeForce 8800GTS 320MB DDR3
DVD: Samsung DVD Recorder 20x +R/+RW -R -RW Lightscribe SATA Black
    (SH-S203P/BEBN)
Temp: 34 C when idle, and max 45 C when busy

I'm beginning to think the issue is hardware-related, because a friend
of mine installed Vista 64 just fine, without errors when running WU at
    all...

    Can anyone help me please?

Ok, i found out whats wrong, and it might be of help to A LOT of
    people.
The frequent errors is because of your memory.

Me and a friend of mine both have 4gb ram, but i have 2x2gb, and he
have 1x4gb. So what you need to do, if you have two bricks of ram, is
to install windows vista 64 bit with only one of them connected.
Once you've installed windows and installed all the updates from WU,
you can turn of your comp and install your other ram-bricks.

This is what I did, and everything is working perfectly now! [IMG]

You could download WMIDIAG.EXE from microsoft, unzip and run it. This
will tell you (at the end) where errors are and (maybe) make suggestions
how to fix them. Good Luck.

I also got the 80070057 error when trying to install Vista SP1.

I D/L the Update readiness tool, which showed no errors.

I rebooted into clean boot mode, tried reinstalling SP1 - same error.

I then called MS Support. Please note that as a consumer this call is free,
if your PC is on a domain it will cost you $249.00. Remove your PC from the
    domain before calling.

The tech had me put my Vista DVD in and do an in place upgrade.

After performing the upgrade, I booted into Safe mode and installed SP1
    which worked.

However, after performing the upgrade I was unable to login to my machine.
The Screen where you'd normally press Ctrl+Alt+Del to login was blank except
for "Windows Vista Business" at the bottom of the screen.

Rebooted into Safe mode again, went into the Control Panel, Local security
options and set the "Do Not Require Ctrl+Alt+Del to Login" from not set to
"Enabled". Rebooted and let the machine come up normally and everything
    worked fine.

I finally got some help directly from Microsoft. They even sent me an
"internal use only" disk which worked perfectly. Here is their reply to
me. I was thoroughly satisfied and SP 1 has been working perfectly ever
since. I'm even thinking about the beta of SP2. Good luck.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your time and all efforts on
    this issue.

From the reply, I understand that you did not have Vista DVD when
    purchasing the machine.

I understand the frustration this issue may have caused.

At this point, the issue is likely caused if some system components
were corrupted. To repair it, we have to perform an In-Place Upgrade
with a full version Vista. However, you do not have Vista DVD.

Based on the situation, I talked to my Leads and consulted for a while,
eventually I was approved to help you order a Vista DVD to repair the
    Vista.

To order a Vista DVD disk, first please provide the following
information. I will then submit an order for you.

Product: (Is it Windows Vista Home Basic edition, Home Premium edition,
Business edition, Enterprise edition or Ultimate edition?)
Version: (Is it 32 bit or 64 bit)
Name to ship to (if not you):
    Street address:
    City:
    State:
    Zip Code:
Phone (for the shipping company to use, should they need to contact
    you):

In addition, I would like to confirm if you want a Vista DVD with SP1
or without SP1. Only the Vista DVD without SP1 can repair your current
system. If you use the Vista DVD with SP1, you have to backup the data
and do the clean install of Vista.

If there are any questions or concerns, feel free to let me know. I
will be glad to be of assistance.

ok. it is now almost two years later than this post. i hasve sp1 installed,
but haven't been able to apply updates for about 8 months. surely something
has been found out in the last two years. BTW, dell support does NOT solve
this unless you have bought in addition to the warrenty, something called
live support which also supports the software. in fact, dell support thought
it had to do with the buggy vista software.

    thanks for any help,
    judy

    You waited 8 months?

    Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder

    Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
    Click OK.
    Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
    Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

    Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
    a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
    b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
    c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this
    folder.

    Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
    Click OK.
    Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
    Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

If that hasn't helped also see:
You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the
"0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft
Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site

Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer service on the
local computer. For more information, review the system event log. If this
is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor and refer to
    service-specific error code 2147942487. (0x80070057)

8 months going by without installing any updates leads one to conclude
that the system is most likely compromised.
The 0x80070057 error is usually associated with an HTTP proxy settings
issue that prevents BITS from starting as a running service, as
    Taurarian has previously noted.
Malware is inclined to do that.

*Strongly suggest* that the system be scanned for the presence of
malware using Malwarebytes Anti-malware before attempting any update
    troubleshooting:

Click the " Download free version " button.
    *Save* mbam-setup.exe
Once the download completes close *all* open browsers and programs.
Now run mbam-setup.exe and allow it to update during it's installation.
Once the installation completes, MBAM should open. If not, open it.
Be sure the Quick scan option is marked and then click the Scan button.
When the scan completes, click the Show results button.
Ensure anything detected is checked and then click the Remove selected
    button.
Restart the system if requested to.

IF anything was detected please post the MBAM scan log.
