I have two monitors that have worked together for a number of years. Installed a new SSD and reinstalled fresh copy of windows 8 and the programs I use.

Now only one monitor will work. Either monitor works if plugged in by its self, but only the second monitor will work if both are plugged in together.

Both will work if I install my old hard drive.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Have you configured windows for the dual monitors?

The problem is that window is not recognizing both monitors at the same time. When both are plugged in, it only recognized one monitor as being connected. It will recognize the first if it is plug it in by itself or the second if plugged in by itself. It just will not recognize both together. When I reinstall my old hard drive, it recognized both units.

    Hi Steve.
With the dual monitors, this will be optioned through video properties as from a fresh operating system and graphics driver install will set single display by default.

OK. How do I change the settings so that the system will recognize both monitors at the same time?

    Hi,

These instructions assume that the computer recognizes both monitors and gives instructions on how to configure them. In my case, the computer is only recognizing one monitor not two. Before I can configure, I need the computer to first recognizes that there are two monitors.

What needs changing to get the computer to recognize that I have two monitors?

    Thanks,

    Steve

Where did you get the copy of Windows to put on the new SSD and is it validated?
    Possibly a corrupt copy.
If all else fails clone your old Hard drive and intall the clone on the new SSD.

No. Look past that. Watch how he toggles one display "off" seemingly, and then back on again by going into display properties and toggling it, and toggling extended mode. It's very likely that your old hard drive merely has another install of the operating system on it right? Therefore, you already had the display properties set for dual/extended. You said you installed a new SSD and now it doesn't "display" the other monitor. Logical deduction dictates that if nothing else changed at all, including the way you have your displays attached, that if the only difference was a new hard drive (SSD) -- then I would think you have a separate operating system installation on each hard drive (even if the same OS-key). So you really just need to get into the display properties and reset things correctly.

Yes I know but some people need to "see" it. As in demonstrated.

Try this connect both monitors and press the Windows key + P. (more like tap and release I believe).

This will cycle through display configuration for dual monitoring.

    Hi,

Total number of monitors is two.
The operating system is on a Microsoft CD that came with the computer when purchased.
Normally the operating system recognizes when a second monitor is attached. For some reason, it is not recognizing the second monitor unless I first disconnect the first monitor, then it recognizes the second monitor.

If I can offer more info, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Steve

tell me what kind of operating system you have like Windows 7 window eight or window 10 and what brand is your computer if it's a desktop or laptop and I will help you and olso let me know how your second monitor is pluged in hdmi or a bunch of pinns like vga if you know what i mean
if you are running Windows 8 and above follow the instruction by Rusty by pressing the window key and then. P at the same time then select (duplicate) and you should have both monitors working
