Hello. A few years ago a friend of mine with my permission connected to my pc using windows xp which I had at the time for a conversation. He did not mention the software involved but asked me if I wanted any mp3 music files downloading to my pc. After agreeing to this he uploaded them and the files where downloaded to my pc . However, he never told me how he sent them even though I had no software installed on my pc. I was aware that having a connection he must have detected my ip address. I don’t see this person now but I would still like to know how he could have download files like that to my pc in the first place.

    Two questions.

    1. Anyone know how he detected my ip address after the pc’s where connected. Cmd prompt maybe? Would it have been internal or public ip addresses?
    2. How did he manage to send the files to my pc?
I have been puzzled to this day.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you for your help.

He may have used XP's Remote Desktop feature.

The IP address won't matter because most Internet Service Providers change your IP address regularly.

The IP that is shown on internet postings, is NOT the computer's IP, unless you have exactly one computer directly connected to the modem. It is the IP assigned by your ISP to the modem. (Actually Comcast/Xfinity rarely changes this. I've had the same IP since November 2017 even with several long term power outages.) Once you connect a router to the modem, the local IP is different. It starts with 192.168.x.x

So you might think my computer's IP starts with 98.235 but it actually starts with 192.168 assigned by the router.
