Hi all! I am now working on a friends laptop. It is a Toshiba Satellite Model A665-S6085. He removed the original HDD because he said it burned (doesn't know where it is) out so now the HDD space is empty. When I boot the laptop, I just get a white screen I figure because there is no HDD or OS. The lights on the front do light such as the Wi-Fi, PWR & Batt (when plugged in). He wants to see if it is worth fixing it and I had been looking at the HDD at the link here...

I am replacing it with the same size (500GB) HDD. Will this work? Because the laptop is old, it's kind slim pickins.

That drive should work in the machine. You're going to have to load an operating system - Windows or Linux.

When you boot the machine without a hard drive, you should get the Toshiba logo followed by a black screen. You say the screen is white so that bothers me. The lights on the front noting power and battery should light up. There may be more wrong with this machine than just a missing hard drive.

That what concerned me too Tony. A BSOD would have told me "don't bother" but only a white screen...? Don't want to waste his money buying a HDD what won't work. It has a CGA graphics female plug...was thinking about hooking up an external monitor but if the vid card or screen is bad as well..to me, not worth going further. He did supply me with the OEM Windows 7 Platinum CD but booting with or without it only gives me the white screen.

There you go, you should be able to boot to the CD. Do you see the Toshiba logo on the screen when it boots?

No logo...just a faint blue line down the right side of the screen. Goes right to a white screen after boot.

That's not right. The machine needs to do a power on self test (POST). That's what goes on when you see the manufacturer's logo on the screen. After that it goes looking for an operating system. It's not getting past the POST.

Does the machine have RAM? If so, have many RAM modules? If more than one module, remove one at a time and try to boot. See if you get different results. Also try without any RAM.

It does have RAM installed. Will do as you suggest and will post back.

OK Tony...removed both RAM cards (only type I could see was "RX8-PC3) and rebooted...black screen. Rebooted with one card at a time swapping slots with each card...white screen. No Toshiba logo. Think this one has gone on to the electronics after life!

Interesting that you got a black screen with no RAM. One other thing to try. Remove the AC power. Remove the main battery. Remove the BIOS battery. Hold the power button for 30 seconds or more. That should drain any electrical charge on the circuitry. Put the batteries back in. Apple AC power and fire it up. If you don't get the Toshiba logo, you have a bad board or maybe a CPU.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I spoke to my friend and we decided to trash the laptop since it is about 10 years old and not worth even the time to see what the issue(s) are.

If it's ten years old, it owes you nothing. :)
