Surprisingly a lot of folks antivirus is not working. And for some, not realizing they don't have any antivirus installed. Since most people do not have a library of viruses ready to test whether their antivirus software is working, and it is debatable whether people should do that anyway, you can use a test created by EICAR (the European Institute for Computer Anti-Virus Research).

    Test your anti-virus software.
First, open Notepad. Then copy and paste into it the text on the line below. (It should all be on one line.)

    X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Then select File > Save As > then save the file as eicar.com.

I knew you would try it Tony! Your have strong experience in this field. But all users should perform this test! Especially the ones just installed a new antivirus program. This way you know it's working and to get know how your new antivirus works.

I posted this for folks to test their AV. But did not expect a lot of folks to reply. The ones I want to respond, saying it's not working meaning their AV is not on or working. You're welcome....:)

OH OK! Thought you might want to know Windows Defender passed. Any way thanks for the thread!
I'm interested in the AV's that fail also and glad WD passed. Some think it's not enough protection.

Eicar has long been established as a synthetic test for Antivirus behavior but reluctantly very few fail to catch it and remember there are 4-5 files and you should try them all to be sure.

Isn't the whole point that your antivirus catches it?

Hi! I guess I'm the newbie here to all these things, but I'm impressed. I have never seen my AV program stop a virus.
I have seen MBAM block malicious IP's, but this is the first time for me to see my AV in action.
    I'm excited!
