I log into my user and no desktop icons appear and if i hover over the taskbar, it shows an hourglass. I have tried to run the task manager, i click on it but it just sends me back to my desktop and nothing happens. Can anyone help?

    Hello and welcome Jose,

Please explain what you mean by you tried to run the Task Manager but it send you back to the desktop.
How are you trying to open the Task Manager? You can use Ctrl-Alt-Del.

If you're getting to the screen where the Task Manager and other other options show up, look in the bottom right corner for the power icon. Click on it and choose Shut Down while holding the Shift key.

Just a quick thought, is it possible that you have inadvertently enabled 'Tablet' mode?
This would make the desktop icons disappear.
Quickest way around Win10 is to right click on the Start button and use the popup menu.
To check if Tablet mode has been enabled....
Right click the Start button and select 'System'

Then on the left pane, click on Tablet and turn-off the tablet mode (if it is turned on) from the right pane.

Then close the Settings window and check if your desktop icons are visible or not.

You can also get to Task Manager easily by using this menu.
