After getting no video signal from the first build, I have installed the cpu into a different mb and still no video signal.

    My first build:
    MB: Asus P5K-VM
    CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600
    PSU: 465W
RAM: Kingston ValueRAM 1 GB 667MHz DDR2 DIMM
    Fans: cpu and rear case
Power switch and speaker are only cables from front that are attached.

    Second build:
    MB: Asus P5KPL-CM
    Everything else as above.

Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 2243swx; VGA input; otherwise works fine.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi there Chris. Welcome.

Have you checked carefully the pins on the CPU to ensure they have not been bent. It's easy to bend these pins and I've seen novice builders do it all the time.

Thanks for responding. Apparently the first mb i tried (Asus P5K-VM) does have onboard graphics so I think I will put the cpu back into that one to rule out a graphics issue. I will check the pins as I do that.

    Sounds like a plan.

While installing the heatsink I had a problem getting all the pins to lock. I would get the pins on one side in but trying the opposite side was putting a lot of pressure on the board. I checked online and found this:

You can see how the mb is bending under where the heatsink is. My board has that same bend in it even with heatsink detached. Found another post where there is a shorter heatsink attached:

I have a lower heatsink from a different board I'm gonna try but I don't think the pins line up. At a bit of a loss, might be fooked.

The pins have to line up. The CPU should drop into the board socket without any force whatsoever. If you're encountering force to insert the CPU, something is wrong.

The cpu seems to drop into the socket without issue. The socket pins seem good and the cpu is lined up with slots on the socket. So I am wondering if this is the wrong heatsink and therefore is putting too much pressure on the board when it is locked in. I got the board from a friend and the heatsink was not attached and had a broken pin which I replaced. In finding online two different sized heatsinks attached to that board (pics from previous post) I am wondering what exactly is the correct size for it.

I found these on Ebay https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?LH_CAds=&_ex_kw=&_fpos=&_fspt=1&_mPrRngCbx=1&_nkw=intel+Q6600+Fan+/+Heatsink&_sacat=&_sadis=&_sop=12&_udhi=&_udlo=&_fosrp=1 Not sure if it the same on you have or not. Also you said there was a pin broken where was it broken on the heat sink or the CPU?The size doesn't matter looking at the pictures you attached I believe the board is bending due to the weight. When the board is installed in the case with the correct stand offs and screws it should be OK.They look like stock Intel heat sinks they are all similar in design.
