It would be nice if we had a set of starting point type specs' for P.C's for diffent purposes. for example, a gaming machine having different needs to a machine thats gonna spend it's life searching e-bay or another thats going to be used for photoshopping etc.
The specs wouldn't need to be component specific as stuff becomes outdated so quickly, I was just thinking along the lines that for example the gaming machine is going to need a better power supply to power the dedicated GPU.
Anyone better qualified than me fancy a shot at this, I am sure it would be usefull to many self builders or upgraders.

    Re: "Stndard" specifications

This is an idea worth pursuing I4N and I suggest that we have the members to create such a "guide." Let see if we get a volunteer or two.

This is an Idea, Personally I would go by Budget, as I rarley find anyone that can afford what they would like, but we could include both I did post some specs for some PC's that someone asked me to give them a price for, before deciding not to buy a custom built box but I see no reason why people cant post specs just for the fun of it

    Re: "Stndard" specifications

Would you be kind enough to include a general idea of what a computer would need if for a high school student, for instance? And perhaps explain a bit about processor speed being as important as Ram - if that's true.

    Thanks so much!

Actually that is quite odd as I certainly did not change the title and I doubt that Mara did either.

I would also be surprised if Ian had the permissions to edit the title, but what is surprising is you have to do it for every post prior to editing ;)

Spelling or not, it's a great idea 14N - :) (I can't possible be alone in loving to learn and this 'specs' would be a terrific thread).

(I'm guilty of lots of stuff but not this one - huge smile).

I do think the point has been missed a bit though. I was under the impression that the suggestion was for some basic standards based on uses. For example a basic gaming system and how it would differ from a more advanced system in term of how the users gaming would be effected.

I also think that it would be good to have Intel and similar AMD systems,

I agree and think this is definitely worth discussing and coming up with such a thing between us all. It will be helpful for everyone in the long run :D

Am I right in thinking along the lines of,
'A basic home machine that is sued for word processing and browsing the internet'
'A family PC that maybe used for all of the above as well as watching a few films/DVDs and minor games.'
'A basic gaming machine that will be used for all of the above as well as playing the latest games but not on the highest resolutions and settings.'
'A mid-range gaming PC that plays latest games on medium settings.'
'A high spec gaming machine that plays the latest games on full settings.'
'A high spec machine for things such as video decoding, and other highly intensive tasks that media PC's will be required to do.'

Please let me know if I have the wrong idea :)

You are thinking along the same lines as I am which does not mean that is what I4N was getting at.

I love your idea, I4N - and the more I read the various ideas that the Thread could include, the more excited I become!

This will be a terrific Reference thread for so, so many of us - especially those who go blank when the smiling salesperson starts reeling off stats, etc. Aah, just think ... none-techs too will be able to go shopping with a list of exact requirements needed in any new machine! :)

Wonder if it's possible to add a bit about monitors, as well? (I learned the hard way that while one monitor is great for most things, it's far from great if one does a lot of graphics, et).

    Dirty Polo,
Yes thats the idea, something that gives an idea like "I want to do this and that so I need the machine to have this and that"
See Mara, I'm learning off this post already, regarding monitors and the mystery title correction fairy :):)

Laughing out loud as I guess there may be a tiny benefit after all in having a 'darn near inept at computers' staff member on board!

(Don't be alarmed reading the above, I4N - the rest of the staff here really are skilled Experts! :)).

Gracious, I do apologize, 14N ... I intended to do this the other day and a huge darn to myself!

I'll pop the request into our Staff section in just a moment so it can be started on ... and if you think of anymore areas that should be covered within the 'Reference for Standard Specs for Computers ' section, please just let us know here.

Your idea is a truly great one, I4N - it'll made the world of difference to so many member to have an instant reference section on this and thank you again!

It does all depend on what you are using the PC for as Polo has said.
There are so many variations of parts that the list could be endless.

Some people prefer AMD some Intel and the same is true of GPUs ATI and NVIDIA
and lets not go onto MOBOs and cases (Polo loves Antec :D)

I will chip in if someone wants to write it up
