How can I fix this error and be able to print again?

    spoolsv.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x10002837" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The
    memory could not be "written".

I cannot open applications that use the printer. Windows Update just keeps
checking and checking - I left it on for 22 hours. Thanks for any advice.

    Bill,
first of all, type this into the "Run" box on the 'Start Menu':

    chkdsk c: /r

....then press [ok] to run the command. Type in [Y] then [ENTER] when asked
if you want to run chkdsk on next reboot. Then reboot your PC.

After chkdsk has run it's task (it might take an hour) and if the problem
persists: Perform a FULL scan with your installed anti-virus software. You
should also try and download and run a full scan with the 'Malwarebytes'
anti virus software - free from:

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

if necessary afterwards, reinstall the file 'spoolsv.exe' by inserting the
Windows XP cd-rom and typing the following in a 'Command Prompt' window (or
    DOS box, to some people):

    expand X:\i386\spoolsv.ex_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe

....where X: stands for your CD/DVD drive. This will restore the file.
If you have SP3 installed then you must type:

    copy C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32

....instead to restore the file. But you *must* clean your system with an
    antivirus software first.

Select Start, Printers and Faxes, double click printer, select from the
menu Printer, Cancell all documents. Does that clear the Print Queue?

Restart the computer and then allowed a few minutes to elapse examine
the Event Viewer logs ffor rhe last boot.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
    hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
    are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
    Event Viewer.
