    Hey guys,

so i bought some headphones and when i plug them into the pc they make a constant noise (high frecuency tone).

This noise disappears when i touch some metallic ending from the outputs of my laptop (for example if i touch with my fingers the USB metal part, the noise disappears), and comes back once i stop touching it.

    Laptop > Asus E1-517G

Has to do something with the electricity i guess... Any ideas what i can do?

Hi and welcome to Computer Help Forums.
Is this noise there with the charger/power supply plugged in or when just on the battery, or both, have you tried either?
Is this noise coming from just the head phones or can it be heard in the laptop speakers, again either or both?

I also assume this headset is USB, and also complete with microphone, am I right?

    Nev.

    Thanks for the fast reply,

no there is no integrated microphone (Sony M44 headphones), the sound also appears when the laptop is turned off (really strange), it can't be heard from the speakers (just appears when i plugin the headphones), and it's connected via Jack (the one used for plugging in headphones).

And the sound isn't constant, sometimes it just appears for some seconds than disappears. Turning the power supply off makes it disappear when you plug it off but after a while (having it plugged off) makes the noise appear again, a bit more quiet.

Do you have noise suppression checked off under sound management?

    What exactly is that?

Even though i don't think its software, since the noise disappears when i touch it with my finger...

Hi Leon. Have you a cell phone close to the laptop? Maybe picking up sounds from another device.
Any difference by disconnecting and removing power cable right away from laptop?
Anything else hooked up to laptop?

As i mentione before, if i take the power cable out it will make the noise disappear (for some minutes) and than comes back. No mobile phone near the laptop, it has to do something with the electricity...

    Really strange.

As well as the above from DSTM, which is a good point if you can borrow a USB powered headset.
Does the power supply plug into an earthed power point? If no earth connection, the laptop could be picking up interference from anything that might be generating the high pitched noise you are hearing.
Also have you tried any other sound device into the socket such as a speaker set.

I got other headphones which don't give me this problem... But the jack is a bit different on each headphone, being the Sony one a bit larger... if i pull it out and it just touches a little with the jack connector the same noise gets really loud

Hi, if the other headphones are also plugged in to the same socket, or are they USB? If not and don't make this noise, the new headphones must have some fault so I would take them back.

However, one other thing worth a look at is to take the laptop into a different room in case it is picking up the noise from something close by, or even take it outside the building is worth a try too.

Okey so now its getting really strange, so i was talking on teamspeak with the Sony headphones (using the laptop mic) and my friends told me they heard the noise while i was talking. So i switched to the other headphones and the noise disappeared...

Btw, the Sony headphones sound just perfectly fine on my mobile phone... Gonna try them out on another PC before giving them back.

Ah, just seen you were posting while I was writing, if the jack plug is a lot different on these Sony headphones, do send them back as they must be either faulty or the wrong type of jack connector.

The fact they are slightly different is worrying in itself, I would though be looking to replace the headset, possibly with a different make and even better obtain a USB headset, and go for one that is definitely Skype compliant as those will work with any VOIP system.

The Jack is completely fine, as i already mentioned it has to do something with the Output.

I'll try out tomorrow if it works if i get an extender
