I am having an issue where i hear in my headset everything that my mic picks up. I am using a Steelseries siberia frost v2 headset. I have unchecked the playback button in the microphone properties. I using windows 7 and am presumably using up to date drivers.

Hi and welcome to Computer Help Forums.
Have you installed the headset audio drivers?
You need headset audio driver 2.8.0171 from http://steelseries.com/support/downloads
    Headset has onboard audio card.
There is a hidden microphone in the headset.

Hi, as well as checking the drivers as DSTM suggests, and if the problem persists after that.

Open the control panel and then "Sound", when that opens click the "Recording" tab, the microphone for your headset should show

Click on that, then click "Properties" In the "Properties" box, click the "Listen" tab.

You should then see a tick box for "Listen to this device", If there is a tick in the box, remove it, that should stop the microphone being heard.

Be sure to click on the "Apply" button if you do have to remove the tick.

Let us know what you find please.

    Nev.

I do not know how to tell what drivers are installed currently. However the listen to this device box is not checked.

You should be able to install the latest drives over the top of previous drivers.
See Post 2 and install latest drivers from link supplied.
Click on your headset and drivers appear for download.
Download drivers for your system 32bit or 64 bit OS
    Choose correct one.

I downloaded the firmware update tool, ran it, selected the siberia frost v2 headset, and the update worked fine. However the problem persists. Also I forgot to mention that the problem only occurs when using skype or looking in the microphone recording properties.

Hi, I am blaming Skype themselves as a maybe for this, as Skype have done various upgrades in recent months, this results in myself also now hearing a faint echo a split second after saying something while on Skype, which did not happen previously.
However you say also you hear things while looking in the microphone recording properties, I assume you hear nothing when not looking there?
That does have me puzzled, though I can only assume it is some odd thing regarding your headset and microphone as I don't have the same make as yourself, mine is made by Plantronics and doesn't do that.

Regarding the split second echo, faint and in the background, I will have to ask my friend if he can hear it next time we speak. Or if indeed he is hearing the same.

If you only hear this in Skype then you must go into the skype utilities to find the solution so not using it that is the best I can tell you. I do remember when Windows 7 first came out I was a heavy Paltalk user and having thei issue with Paltalk which was not solved until I added a pci soundcard to the computer that gave me better control over the sound options.

One reason why the echo often happens is because the person you are talking to often has his volume turned up too loud. So your voice comes out of his speaker and again enters his mike which again reaches you. Suggest to him to lower the speaker volume or place the mike further away from his speakers.
I was speaking to a guy yesterday in the UK and I was getting an echo. He wasn't using a headset.
I was watching on webcam and he had his lappy right under his nose.
I asked him to move the laptop further away from him and the echo stopped.
Helps also if both parties are using the same Skype version.
