Slow Download Speed on Steam

Hello,

I live in Australia and my usual download speed on Steam is about 200kb/s. Recently however, the speed has been about 20kb/s.

I tried downloading on my laptop and the download speeds were fine. This laptop is running Windows 7, and the newer computer I'm trying to download on is running Windows 10. Could this have something to do with it?

I've tried turning on and off my router, changing the download region and unchecking the "Automatically detect settings" box in Internet Options. None of this helped.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Wired or wireless

Has the new Windows 10 system ever downloaded at proper speeds?

Have you contacted your internet provider there may be a service issue in the area.

Could be downloading and or installing updates which would cause you to have a slower connection.

Things running in the background could also slow the system like Firewalls, Anti Virus, protection software. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) software.

 

Hi thank you for your reply. I'm using a wireless internet and ive actually been able to download properly before so I was thinking it might be that ive reached my download limit for the month.

Is there a way of checking if theres something downloading in the background?

 

Do you know what you speeds should be 200kb/s is slow. Does it increase at all if you connect directly to the modem with a cable?

Does Steam have a limit on the amount of downloads you can do? Now I have heard that the internet service provider will throttle (slow) your speed if you use to much data.

Press the Windows Key and X
Select Command Prompt (Admin)

After the Command Prompt opens type the following commands and press enter after each.

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

Reboot the computer and try downloading again and let us know if it helps.

I tried those command prompt steps and my download is still very slow. I also went on that speedtest website and it said my download speed is 1.01Mbbs.

How many kbs is that?

 

Bit over 1000 KB/sec. Something is wrong here as even ADSL gives you round 5 MB/sec download speed.
I am from Australia also.
Sure you haven't exceeded your quota and you are being throttled by your IP providor.?
Looks like that's what is happening IMO.
OPTUS are one of the worst for throttling if you are with them.
I would be contacting your IP providor and get them to do a line speed test.

 

I'm with iPrimus. Maybe I can give them a call and see whats wrong. I'm not sure what my download limit is. I'll get back to you after i call. Thanks for your help

I called my internet service provider (iPrimus) and they were able to help me out. I've gone from 20kb/s to 440kb/s. My speed according to speedtest.net is 2.04Mbps. Do these two numbers add up? Or is it Steam that is causing the slow download speed?

 

When you talked to iPrimus did they happen to inform you what your speed should be. After looking at the plans that they offer that could be about right for the speed.

Run the speed test site on the other system and post what the results. The laptop running Windows 7.

Download Minitoolbox to you desktop of the Windows 10 system.

Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, 8 or 10; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click and select "Run as Administrator".

Checkmark following radio buttons:

• Flush DNS
• Report IE Proxy Settings
• Reset IE Proxy Settings
• Report FF Proxy Settings
• Reset FF Proxy Settings
• List content of Hosts
• List IP configuration
• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs

Click Go the results will appear as a txt file on your Desktop.

Looking to see what is running that may be possibly slowing your connection. I do not see anything that is.

Checking to see how stable the connection is. There are no proxy setting which are good and every thing look good to me.

Did you ever ask iPrimus what your speeds are suppose to be getting? With out knowing which level you have it is hard to say if your connection speeds are correct.

Going by what you have stated form 1840 kb/s ( 1.84Mbps) to 2040 kb/s (2.04Mbps). Which you will notice will change depending on how may people are accessing the site at the same time you are and if any one else is using your the same connection you are.

Do they seem to be more stable? Do you know who if any one is connecting to you wireless connection? You do have security enable for your wireless?

Hi. No i didnt ask my provider what my speed should be. Right now (Sunday) the internet is really slow but that always happens. 440kb/s is much better than what I used to get so I'm pretty happy with that. However i dont get how the speedtest.net comes up with such a fast speed and how that doesn't translate to the current speed I'm getting. It's quite annoying. Also ive got a password protected Internet so i dont think it's being used by anyone else

Where or do you have if any filters connected? Phone lines that have phones attached there should be one on each of them. The modem should have one built in so there so no need to have one attached.

There is an equation that you can use to convert it. Not to sure the way I can explain it will do it justice yet I will try.

Take the number the Speedtest shows and multiply that by 125. Which should give you the information you are looking for.

2.04*125=255

 

Try the IPrimus speed test. The further you are from a Postal Exchange, the slower the speed as well.
