I was wondering if is is possible, difficult, or expensive to try upgrading to Windows 10.

    The Windows upgrade was free.

I guess it depends on the age and the specs of your computer.
I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop a few years ago to Windows 10.
I've had no issues with it but the specs were really good.
I have an I-7, terabyte HDD, 24 gb RAM.

How does one go about upgrading? Are there instructions anywhere?

    I'm sorry, Bill.
It looks like Microsoft closed the loophole for a free upgrade on September 20th 2023. Screenshot_20231212_002157_Google.jpg

Also, Dell does NOT offer any upgrade for your computer. If the manufacture will not offer drivers, it is a bad idea to try and force an upgrade because you will have headaches.

If you are worried, get a chromebook for safe surfing and use the Windows 7 computer to do things off the internet.
