We have a HP Pavillion 400-044 desktop, refurbished and with Win8.1. Also attached is a new Brother MFC-J470DW printer. Our router is Motorola Surfboard sbg 6580 wireless cable modem gateway. The Brother and Motorola products worked fine with old system. I took computer to shop due to odd things happening. He said it's fine, ran 3 antimalware, crapware, virus, etc. He removed a "suspected" malware, a download helper. I believe it was part of the Brother programming, which does have one. My printer doesn't print online,(yes the settings do say it's online) and yes, it shows wifi icon. Email is also an issue. I tried to send photo in email, the computer tells me I have no email program. Perhaps I have not set it up correctly, the default is set. Mail version 17.5, and set up thru our cable provider Cox. It doesn't save sent emails, I can't locate the place to set that. The size and boldness of text changes during composing of email. At times email doesn't open unless I reboot. Perhaps we haven't done the set up on email correctly. The router set up fine with old system. We had a lot of difficulty setting up our 2 phones, printer, and 2 other devices after getting Win8. The lights on router for send and receive are now blue, they were Always green. Has something to do with locking on channel, and I'm supposed to reset it. Have not done that as we have no computer at all without this one. Given that last attempt with wifi, I'd prefer to wait. I'm totally flummoxed with this thing. Have we made a bad purchase? Or can these crazy issues be worked out? thanks....

Unless you have an email p[rogram on the computer itself as opposed to in the coud, no version of Windows will allow you to send a photo from the desktop or laptop, as it says there is no program. If you are using an actual program like Live Mail or Outlook you can search for default applications and declare them but if online as I suspect you must send from online by means of an attachment. Look for the "paper clip" icon in the screen you are trying to send it from.

Any programs the Brother software installed were because you chose actual or "typical" versus "custom" for the install job and had no option to remove the bloatware, they all have it every brand does. You can go into Control Panel, Programs and Features and uninstall anything installed without going to a shop to have them make a big deal over.

Not sure why you think printer doesn't print online but all you need is a pc, a browser and a printer. Make and model means nothing. You may be missing a "print" icon on the site you are trying to print from, designed to make the job easy. You can also usually right click and choose print also but should highlight what you want to print by left clicking and dragging across what you want to print to highlight it then right click inside it to choose print and then in the printer box that opens up choose the word "selection" before printing to avoid printing the entire website. none of this has changed since Windows 95 actually and has nothing to do with the version of Windows. it is probably more than likley the fault of the seller of the pc who took your money and said thank you feeling no further obligation. Of course that is the price of price shopping vs help shopping. As a system builder if I sold you the system, you would not have had to post any of these questions so it sounds like you might be better served by finding a reliable tech who comes to the home and can show you this and 15 more things in an hour!

Thanks so much for the advice. I was thinking we didn't set things up correctly. It appears I was right. Control panel, default programs, lists "mail" only. But it does send and receive mail, just not many other options.
In trying to print from a website, I was clicking on the print on our bank site. It sent up a separate window which was reduced in volume from page, presumably to save space. But, the printer won't print it. I have to copy our statement by hand, no other choice but to pay for mailed copies, and they waste paper by the tons. Guess I'll put out the call for help with Win8 set up.

Are you certain you cannot copy and paste as I suggested by left click and drag across whatever you are trying to print and then if it won't print that way by right click copy and choose "selection", you can always paste into a word processor and print it that way most likely.

I don't think Windows 8.1 works that differently once you make a few changes such as add the start menu from "Classic Start" and choose to skip the "Metro" desktop on bootup.

What I have generally found is so many people using shortcuts that were not meant to be in XP or Windows 7 that are either lacking now because there is no history yet or they were doing them the wrong way anyway and that road has been eliminated. It isn't the user's fault I fault the sellers who never show people the proper way to do anything, so since there are so many different ways to do things the seller stumbles on a way to circumvent the issue and that becomes the way they do it from then on.

If you can print using other programs such as Word Pad, the problem may be in the printer selection when using a browser such as Internet Explorer. When printing from Internet Explorer, check to see which printer is selected in the top left of the options pane. You may have inadvertently selected an old printer that isn't attached.

On the mail issue, check with Cox.
