the OS is vista,32bit. In using the repair with the reinstalling DVD another basic.OS was installed which now is used to operate my Dell Inspiron 1525. Looking in the hard drive, the original OS is shown but I can't select it.I tried using the boot display with no success. How can I select this original OS.

Hello Peasant and Welcome to Computer Help Forums.

Does the operating system show in the boot menu or can you only view it on the hard drive itself?

If you completed the install it will show on the boot menu.

If it's not showing you may need to reinstall.

In short it sounds like as for the hard drive, you replaced the original all but for the boot signal. You can go into Run, msconfig, OK, Boot and delete the bad link so at least it boots up to the working OS all the time.
