Hi Grandra. A Techie should be along shortly to assist you.

Let me ask you a few of the questions that one of our hardware experts will probably need to know.

    1. Is this new SATA drive to be the primary drive? A replacement?

    2. Can you identify the MOBO by manufacturer and model?

the new SATA HDD will be the replacement of the old IDE HDD (or Primary)

    the MOBO is Asus P4S533

I think it best to wait until either Dalo Harkin or allheart55 arrives. One is in England and the other in Philadelphia. From what I can gather these adapters are not all that reliable and that MOBO has been around since at least 2002. It may be time for an upgrade but, as I said, wait for the real experts not some old Administrator.:D

    Hello Grandra,

What type of adapter are you attempting to use? I usually use an IDE to SATA adapter cable for strapping a drive to my bench
box for technical issues. Have you removed the original IDE drive? You also need to make changes in the bios. If you could be a
bit more specific it would be helpful.

Have you checked for a bios flash for your board? It sounds like it needs to be updated.

    Hi Grandra,

Enter the bios and and select Integrated Peripherals. You should see settings for USB Device, Onboard FDC Controller etc.
Under SATA Mode change the setting from IDE to RAID or ACHI if available. Save and exit. Reboot and see if your mobo
    recognizes the SATA drive.

If the above instructions do not work, try selecting Standard CMOS Features in the bios and look for ACHI setting for Drive 0.....

Sorry Grandra you are just victim of the Easter weekend. I am sure that allheart (or someone else) will see it soon and comment. I am not good enough in that area to try to take it over.

You will need a spare power line from the Computer PSU to power the drive. The adapter
supplies power to the board and not to the SATA drive.
