Remove previously mapped network drive

The company my wife worked for insisted that her laptop be mapped to one of
their network drives. She did so, but now no longer works for them. The
mapped drive still shows up under "computer" and she always gets a message
that some drives cannot be connected.

How can we completely remove this previously mapped drive from her system?

In the 'Computer' menu, click 'map network drive', and uncheck 'connect at
logon'

Hi Raas,

To do this, click the start orb and then click 'Computer'. In the bar at the
top is a number of options, and one of these is 'Map network drive'. Click
it. This brings up a dialogue with the heading 'What network folder would you
like to map?', and underneath is a check box 'Reconnect at logon'. You need
to click that check box to remove the tick (ie, the check box should be
clear). You might also need to delete the contents of the 'Folder:' box as
well. Click 'Finish' when you are done and close 'Computer'.

I had previously tried this, however when I get to the dialog box that asks
for the mapping, I uncheck the check box but the 'finish' button is not
enabled. If I select a folder from the dropdown box, the 'finish' button is
enabled, but the system wants to map a drive again. If I clear the folder
area completely, the 'finish' button is no longer enabled. In otherwords,
this option doesn't work. I don't want to simple have the mapped drive not
show, I want it gone, and this option doesn't work for either scenario unless
I'm able to be connected to the drive while selecting the option. I can't do
that. She no longer works there.

Any other suggestions would be quite welcome.

Can you not just right click it's icon and choose disconnect?
Don't have any mapped on here to test but us what I've done in previous
versions

 

This may sound weird but it works.

If you have access to a network with shares simply
map a new network drive using the same letter.
You will then be able to use the disconnect option
from windoze explorer.

If you don't have access to a network with a share
Share a folder on your PC, repeat the above process.

One thing that is a pain is that when a network share is
no longer available the system will hang while it tries to find it.
This happened on XP also.

I've done that. The drive says it's disconnected, but when I go to
'computer' it still shows in the drive lists but with a great big red X on
it. I also still get the message that the system cannot find a network drive
and points to this one since it's all she has ever had on her computer.

Right clicking the drive doesn't even give the option to try to remove or
delete the drive.

Disk management doesn't give that option either, since it doesn't recognize
the drive at all. Only in startup and when going into 'computer' or "my
computer" as XP users would know it.

I just want all references to it gone. Disabling doesn't cut it.
Disconnecting does either.

Thanks, but I don't have access to a network with shares. She is at home
now, no network, no share point, etc.

In the hopes that this will help others:

I received information through another source that directed me to use the
following in order to completele remove the unwanted, disconnected, mapped
network drive from my Vista system:

Start > run > type 'cmd' > then run the command 'net use y /d'
then reboot.

It works! the 'y' in the command is the drive letter, could be anything
you have on your computer that you want to remove.

Hi,
This worked for me...
First, you need have a "Shared Folder" on your hard drive. If you
haven't got one already, create a new folder on your hard drive called
"Shared", then right-click it and select properties. Click the Sharing
tab and tick the "Share this folder" box. Next, click "My Computer" and
in the Tools Menu, click "Map Network Drive". Notice the little
down-arrow next to the drive letter shown. Click the arrow to get a list
of letters. Select the one you want to delete, then browse for your
Shared folder and select it. By this means, you will assign the drive
letter to a real folder. Make sure the "reconnect at login" box is
un-ticked. Click the Finish button to get a warning. Answer YES and the
Shared folder will open. Close it. Next, right-click the drive in My
Computer and select disconnect. Ah, I hear you say, but it is still
there! Re-boot and have another look - enjoy!

Hi Raas, i am a vista user too and tried your suggestion on the cmd line
and it worked just great. seems to be fine now and stops the computer
hanging on startup too! thanks for your help.
