For the record, I believe plodr meant "residential gateway" device. A "residential gateway" is another "marketing term" for a single integrated device that includes the modem and router in one box (along with a 4-port switch and wireless access point).

When the modem and router are separate devices, a "gateway" device is still required to connect the local network to the ISP's network. And when separate, the modem is serving as the gateway.

I also use separates, with a Netgear "wireless router" and Motorola modem.

I also am not clear on what is meant by starts. I was assuming restarting the computer but in re-reading, I might have misunderstood.

Either way, the problem appears to be resolved.

    I just re-read and I have a correction to a question I asked.
I said "You are powering down the modem are you?"
I meant to ask, "You are not powering down the modem are you?"

Modems do not need to be powered off daily.

I cannot remember the last time I intentionally powered off my modem. I know it was several months ago because I lost internet connection and I hoped recycling the modem would restore it. It didn't. It turned out half the town was out.
