Hi there. I'm new to this forum so I hope I have posted this in the right section.

I am having problems with my laptop. I turned it on the other day it said it had to update. This isn't unusual, so I let it run. Only this time, it took much longer than usual. Almost an hour. However, once it was done and I tried to start it up, it only goes to a black screen. I can move my cursor and that is a little message in a box in the top left hand corner that says, ""Personalised Settings. Setting up personalised settings for: Web Platform Customisations."

If I press ctrl+alt+delete, I can access my task manager and run tasks that way, but I just can't actually seem to get to my desk top. All I get is that black screen.

I have to warn you that I am really that computer smart and know only the very very basics.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Viazon and Welcome to Computer Help Forums.

Have you tried booting the computer in safe mode to see if the problem still exists?

(Tap the F8 key at startup)

Hi there. Thanks for the advice.

However, I have tried that and nothing has happened.

Did you get the menu where you can select Safe Mode?

I don't think so. What happens when I turn my laptop on is it goes to the welcome screen, where I would need to type in my password. Only it doesn't say my username anymore. It just says welcome. It goes straight from there to the black screen. I've tried pressing f8 many times during the start up but nothing happens.

You have to begin tapping the F8 key as soon as you press the start button. If you see the Welcome screen, you haven't timed it correctly. Restart and try again.

What exactly fixed it? Did you get to Sfae Mode and if so what did you do there or perhaps chose "Last Known Good Configuration"?

I just started pressing F8 as soon as I started the laptop, as suggested and it just went back to normal. I didn't have to choose or select anything.

That is very odd and then this may not be over.
