Hi: BLKBRD37 here. On Vista Hope Premium (HP Desktop). Nothing happens when I put a disc in the CD/DVD Drive - Multimedia Optical Drive. Any solutions? Thanks.

    Hello BLKBRD37...
It may well be that your optical drive has indeed gone south, but it could also be a software problem.

Lets try and establish a few facts.
    a) Have you tried different types of disc? (Shop brought, DVD, CD, Your own storage disc, etc)
    b) Does the DVD/CD drive show in "Computer" under Devices with Removable Storage?

    c) Are there any yellow question/exclamation marks showing in Device Manager?

If you need any help establishing these facts, please ask.

Thank you, Frank. Checked Device Manager. Lists AL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GH40L. Properties says 'A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality - Code 32. Yet, when I checked for driver updates I was assured that the correct driver was installed for the Multimedia Optical Drive.

    Hi
Go to Device Manager again and right click on the DVD drive > Properties > Driver
If "Roll Back Driver" is an option click on this.
This will revert the drivers to an earlier version.
( It could be that updated drivers are causing the Code 32 )

    If this fails:
    Un-install the drivers.
Again from Device Manager > right click on the DVD Drive > un-install
    Re-boot he machine.
    Windows will re-install the drivers.

If this doesn't fix it - we can try deleting the upper and lower filters from the registry.
We will need to know the Operating System that you have.

This problem was resolved by instructions from HP to go kinto the register and remove the filters. Many thanks to all who gave their suggestions.
