I am running Vista on an HP machine and when I try to install my HP Printer Scanner software, it tells me it cannot install saying that 3 registry keys are missing that are needed for the install ..and a forth notice states that the installer cannot access a necessary registry key to complete this installation. In short it can't install without these items. I have used this printer on 3 different windows XP machines and have never had a problem, ..but this newer computer is loaded with Vista OS ...is there a solution to this ..or is my printer obsolete?

Are you trying to install the printer software from a disk?

What is the model of your printer? We will see if we can get you a Vista printer driver.

Just a note, I had an old game for xp, to get it to install on win7 I opened the disk to view the files, then set the compatibility properties of all the executable files for xp, but as were dealing with drivers downloading the newer updated ones is best.

Hey Match, I know what you suggest sometimes works for others but every time I have tried the compatibility mode for something it not only didn't work most of the times but the few times it did work the whole system became so unstable I had to uninstall whatever it was so I urge caution with that suggestion.

I will certainly back that one up Rich, I had a superb music and midi sequencer program that was built for XP, then the company that created it got taken over and that software died with the company, so no updates available. I tried the compatibility business and finished up having to use system restore back to before trying it. Windows 7 went rather crazy till I did that.
I still keep the XP machine in running order just so I can still use the program.

If you have W7 Pro, you can run the free XP virtual machine from MS. That will allow you to use your old XP programs.

In actual fact Tony, it was the virtual machine that sent everything stupid, Windows 7 became a really unstable mess, investigations showed that the virtual machine hadn't properly installed.

I have only one customer using XP Mode on a W7 machine. She's running some really old programs. I guess I installed XP mode properly for her because she has no issues with it. She uses XP Mode most of the time.
