Dell desktop, W7 HP SP1 x64 on LAN. Recently computer refused to wake from "sleep" mode- no response at all. Is there a method for dealing with this?

If tapping on the keyboard, moving the mouse and providing a little tap to the power button doesn't work, then hold the power button down for about 8 seconds. Then see if it will turn back on. You will lose any changes you've made to any open documents.

If that still fails, the only thing you can do is to pull the AC power cable. Re-apply power and restart. You'll probably get a screen asking how you want to start. Chose Start Normally.

Thank you. Is there any downside (other than to unsaved work) to shutting down via the power button or line power disconnect?

    I wouldn't worry too much.
At the end of the day, if it's the only option open to you to restart the system .... then you have no choice.
That said.... it's best not to make a habit of it.
Some say that it's possible to damage the hard drive ...... but I personally have never had any problems when I've had to run a hard reset.

Thanks for the reassurance. It has been our habit for some years to start the computer in the morning and leave it on sleep mode when not in use through the day. Never had this situation arise before. I actually did just what TonyD said to do and got a black recovery screen, chose "start normally." All seems well now.
