Oh Snoopy, that has confirmed what many of us running Windows XP have heard - sigh.

To me, all the Windows new operating systems are wonderful for those who really love the 'latest and greatest' . but not so good for those of us that think of the operating systems sort of like cars.

Used to think I really needed a brand new car each any every two years ... but my Windows XP is like the car I have now and I'd be horrified if suddenly the manufacturer decided to not provide parts anymore to ensure it would run smoothly and safely.

Yes XP will fade away just like 98 an it's predecessors did, an so will Windows7 some day, but guess what all of these have in common. They still ride on the back of MS DOS.

    Thanks

With all due respect wildman that simply is not true and has not been true for some time.

In reality the entire Windows NT line of operating systems (which includes XP) have not been reliant on DOS at all except to maintain the ability to run some DOS reliant programs.

The opening of the command box does confuse some people because of its similarity of appearance, etc. to the old DOS box but they are not the same.

I thought they were one and the same also ... so much to keep learning with these computers - gentle sigh.

Could have fooled me as some of the functions (search an msconfig etc.) for example sure look like the ole MS DOS to me. Yes they may work without DOS but could we due everything on our machines without DOS?

    Thanks

I am not going to argue the point particularly when there are still plenty of purported tech sites that still refer to to the command prompt window as a DOS or MS DOS command window.

It is also confused by the similarity of some of the command prompts. However unless you are using Windows 98 (maybe 2000 or millennium, not sure) you are not using MS DOS. Some version of XP did rely on a stripped down version of DOS for boot purposes but I am not sure how long that lasted.

For what little I know, but as I understand it, the old MS DOS stood for MicroSoft Disk Operating System, that was an operating system that ran directly of the disk. All started to change around 1995 though.
For a lot more about it, providing you have the time to read and understand the more technical bits, have a look here at this Wikipedia article=
