Noscript Addon Messed Up My Facebook Account

I've recently started getting the 'unresponsive script' error message when using facebook through firefox so I did some reserach and decided to install the NoScript addon from the firefox website. The tool has an option to block scripts from certain websites, so I added facebook as this is where I was having the problem with the scripts. However, as soon as I'd done this, my facebook account all but died. I can type a comment/reply to a friend's comment, but hitting return to submit that comment results in no action whatsoever (aside from the cursor disappearing from the comment field). If I access a friend's page and hit the 'Send Message' button, the page refreshes but with a huge blank area where the private message box should be. Trying to bring up the chat widget also results in no action whatsoever. There are other oddities too; if I try to play a youtube clip that's been embedded in a comment, it opens a duplicate of that page in a new tab, instead of simply playing the clip. Hitting the 'like' button results in the same.

I disabled the addon which didn't fix the problem, so I then uninstalled it completely, but that didn't fix the issue either. I have also, naturally, tried rebooting several times, but can only use facebook through IE now, which is a bit of a pain.

    Any help/advice much appreciated.

Hi Albert, It does not sound like a browser issue to me but I amy be wrong. Have you tried using another browser to see if it works.
Also, firefox has a "safe mode" that should disable all add ons etc. Have you tried it?

    :D

I haven't tried the safemode, but I've uninstalled the addon now anyway, and still have the problem.

Firefox safe mode should disable everything but the bare bones browser. Also, what version of java are you using. YOu will see it listed among your programs in the control panel if you select add or remove programs.

The latest version is 6. 25 there have been some problems with earlier versions. It should read 6.0. 25 check your firefox add ons.

Thanks for all your help, BCB, but to be honest I think we're going off track here. The problem with facebook started immediatley after I installed the NoScript addon, so I'm pretty certain the issue isn't with java and/or any updates I may or may not need. I've uninstalled the NoScript addon, but it hasn't fixed the issue. I'm convinced the problem is that this addon blocked the scripts from facebook, which were necessary to make it operate properly, and now I can't undo the process.

To the contrary. The fact that you can get facebook but not interact with it leads me to believe that there may be issues with Java. I am not positive of course put it is a real possibility. Othrrwise I would not have mentioned it. You also have not mentioned whether or not you have tried other browsers such as IE.

Please don't take this as me being rude. You're always first to answer my questions and continue to do so until the problem is resolved, but are you actually reading my replies?

Check my original post and my reply to your first post. I have answered your question Re other browsers twice now.

You are right, I missed the quotes in your post 3 and it does add something to the problem.

The NoScript add on does effect java as well as javascript and I believe that Java needs to be working for you to interact with face book. It appears that NoScript may have made a change in your fireFox profile that was not reversed when you uninstalled or disabled the add on.
Have you tried clearing your cache and cookies from firefox?

Again, have you checked to see that your Java Console is enabled? Not to harp on an old subject but it staill may be helpful if you checked the actual version to make certain that it is 6.0.25.

It does seem to be simply a browser issue but we cannot rule out malware. If what I suggest does not work then I will leave it to others to inject their insight.

Right. I uninstalled all versions of java, then installed java 6.0.25. I then cleared my history, cookies and cache, and facebook still doesn't work in FF.

As I last resort I'm now going to try a reboot to make sure all the installations and clearing out has taken full effect, but I'm not hopeful.

BeeCeeBee has a way of being right most of the time, but another approach is:

You might want to create a new Profile in FireFox.

Also, you seem to have been able to get into FF safe mode. But, I'll just mention that if you're using FF version 4, you have to hold down shift when opening FF, in order to reach menus that allow various approaches to the safe mode .... and other.

    Luck!

Thanks, KlickKatt. In actual fact I didn't do the safe mode thing as I didn't know how to do it. I have considered a new FB profile, but in that it works okay in IE I'm tempted to leave it.

I'll check out how to enable safe mode and try FB again.

Right, tried safe mode and it made no difference. Never mind, I can live with it.

    Thanks all for your help.

In the interests of thoroughness, it might be best to try creating another Profile (as suggested by KlickKatt) and see if the problem persists. You don't have to remove your current Profile to try a new one. A new Profile can be created in addition to the existing one. If the new Profile works, keep it, build it to requirements and then remove the Profile you're using at present. If is doesn't make any difference, then the new (experimental) Profile can be removed. Nothing gained or lost. The procedure for creating a new Profile and the way Firefox then works can be found here:

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows

    Two tips.

    * Be sure not to delete the Default Profile yet.
    * To be safe, make a backup of your bookmarks before working with Profiles. Keep the backup somewhere outside of Firefox's directories.

If the new Profile doesn't make a difference, I think you'd need to start thinking about the cause being outside of Firefox, even if that seems unlikely. I don't use Facebook but wonder: Does it use Flash Player? If so, then it might be worth making sure it is up to date and that other sites that use Flash Player work OK in Firefox. Firefox uses a different (separate) version of Flash Player and Java to IE, so the fact that Facebook works in IE doesn't necessarily discount these two items.

The only other point that occurs to me is: Could it be something in the Firewall, or other security program that has script blocking capabilities?

Using NoScript does take a bit of getting used to.
Not all the scripts on a page are actually from the actual company that owns the page you are viewing,
So you could allow Facebook, but that doesn't mean that everything will work ok.
NoScript will disable the Java anyway, so you will have to set this to allow it for certain sites.
As you have removed NoScript, the problems should disappear, if the problems are still present.... they are not the doing of NoScript.
I've used NoScript for as long as i can remember and have only had a handful of annoying problems..... but a simple tweak of the settings and everything is fine again.
