No Internet?

    Hello again. My laptop recently stopped connecting to the internet. It will find the network and connect to that but it won't find the internet. I've tried both wired and wireless, neither have worked. If anyone has any suggestions that would be awesome. Thanks!

    If so, try disconnecting power from the router, turn off your computer. Wait a minute and apply power to the router and then turn on your computer.

    It sounds the same yes eh? but yet this time im positive somethings going on with my laptop as it won't connect anywhere i go with it. It'll find the networks connect to the networks but just won't get on the internet.

    I m sorry but I don't know your level of expertise.
    You need to get to the RUN command. If it's not listed, right-click on the Start button, go to Properties and put a check mark in the Run command opetion. (I'm doing this from memory so I may not have it exactly right.

    Now, the Run command should be listed to the right of All Programs. Click on it.
    When you get the box to come up, type CMD and press the ENTER (or RETURN key).
    That will bring up a black screen with white lettering.
    Type in ping www.google.com and hit the ENTER key. You will get a response or a timeout. Let us know which.
    Type in ping 64.233.169.99 and hit the ENTER key. You will get a response or a timeout. Let us know which.

    If both of those timeout, please type in ipconfig /all and hit the ENTER key. In there you should see that your computer has an IP address that looks something like 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x, where x will be some number.

    I'm assuming you have a router. What make & model is the router?

    for the google one it couldn't find host

    for the 64.233.169.9 the ping statistics were Pacets: sent=4, received =0, lost=4
    each of them had a "transmit failed, error code 1231"

    with the ipconfig alot of stuff came up so i don't know what you want out of it

    and the router i use is a D-link model # DI-524

    OK - since you have a DI-524 you should be able to ping 192.168.0.1
    That would assertain that you have a connection to the router.
    Does that work?

    Also, have you tried disconnecting power from that router for a few minutes? That sometimes works.

    Does you laptop have an inbuilt wireless card that you connect with or is it a dongle?
    you need to have it configured with settings that the router will recognise such as the security type and password.
    Open your browser and type 192.168.1.1 and you should get to the routers home page (you will have to be connected via an ethernet cable to do this)
    can you get that page open?

    In post #1 it was stated that this happens with both wireless and wired. So I don't think the wireless card is the issue.

    On the D-Link DI-524 - its default is 192.168.0.1 which is know is not what most routers use.

    But you are aware that chipset drivers contain BOTH onboard Ethernet drivers and also wireless drivers if there is a wireless card present

    Ok, has it ever connected to either of those in the past?

    can you let me know the make and model of the laptop and I will find the drivers that you need, can you also please go to control panel and then device manager and let us know if there are any yellow exclamation marks next to any devices.

    and then we can go from there

    I think that was answered in post #1.
    Dalo is going to make sure you have the right drivers installed.
    In the meantime, what are you running for a firewall? If anything other than Windows Firewall, turn it off for now and see if you have Internet access or can ping 192.168.0.1.
    I'd also like to see what comes up in ipconfig /all.

    its an HP pavilion dv2500, there were no yellow exclamation marks either in the device manager.

    To Dragnet haha theres no firewall up currently. and when i get home later ill screen shot the ipconfig/all and post it up using my desktop.

    Please go to www.superantispyware.com and download the free trial version so that you can load it onto your home laptop. It has a nice repair tool which might help. Get it loaded onto your laptop and open the application.

    Go to Preferences. Click on the Repairs tab.
    Scroll down to Repair broken Network Connection (WinSock LSP chain).
    Highlight it and click on Perform Repair.

    That sometimes works.

    it'll let me install that without an internet connection? I was trying to get avira but.. alas need a internet connection to finish set up haha. I'll give it a shot.

    When on the SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) page, click on the Free Trial Download and download the file to a USB drive using your Internet-connect machine. It'll be a single file. Take the USB drive to the laptop and load SAS from the USB drive.

    Seeing a network is one thing, connecting to it is something else entirely.
    99% of wireless connections have some kind of security on them that require a password (WPA, WPA2 etc)
    The only time that you do not need a password is when you connect with an Ethernet cable. As yours does not work with an Ethernet cable it would point to the drivers, or the connections being DISABLED in Network settings.

    I'll leave Dragnet to this one as I cant seem to read all the posts.....just shout when the solutions that 'sometimes work' dont
