OK Wife's getting a new PC, Yes she is no arguing old one's dieing fast and just had some cash become available.

So if anyone is bored and wants something to do, see what sort of a box you can put together for £300, I'll source the OS separate, and Monitor.

I would say Intel but with such a small budget I think reality is AMD.

The GPU will be a Geforce 8400GS I know this because its sitting in my case lol so going over budget on the new GPU will be very acceptable as its mine :D

Yes I agree with that DSTM, the hardest thing it will have to do is play Harry Potter Games, and surf the net

Does anyone have an opinion on a GPU for around the £30 Bracket, I'm looking at the Asus 1GB Radeon HD 4350 PCIE HDMI as an upgrade to an Nvidia Geforce 8400GS,

this gives an increase in RAM, CPU Hz, and RAM Hz but will this make a significant difference ? Dalo ;)

    OCZ PC8500 4x1GB sticks

    Samsung - all the way

    Right, my turn

CPU - AMD Athlon II X2 240 £45.70 from Scan its a 2.8GHz that you can easily OC to 3.5GHz

    MOBO - MSI 770-C45 £49.15 from Scan (uses DDR3)

    PSU - Corsair CX400W £37.58 from Scan

    RAM - Corsair Dominator XMS3 - PC3-12800 £59.50 from Scan (2GB)

Optical - Samsung SH-D162D £11.74 (its not a writer, but from what you said would you need one?)

    Total is £205 ish

GPU is a tough one as you really are asking alot for £30 ish (but onboard is not going to cut it)
    I would say this http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-Power-Color-HD-4550-PCI-E-20(x16)-1800MHz-GDDR3-GPU-600MHz-80-Cores-DVI-D-Sub-HDMI £36

    The rest is personal choice

Not wanting to seem picky but MSI Motherboard !!!! you got to be joking

But after a little research it would seem that they do mass produced cut down cheap versions for pre built systems, that seem to have lots of problems, but taking into account that there will be more problems with a 1000 motherboards than with 100, maybe there is wisdom in this choice?

and there own product seem to be quite reliable with favorable comments so I'll go with that choice.

RAM any reason for that choice when there are cheaper slightly slower versions? without the heat sinks?

Optical drive for the extra £3/4 I think that you may as well have the write capability useful for backing up?

but here is a revised spec sheet, with ebuyer and scan prices, although scan have it on service ;) worth a few quid extra for piece of mind IMO

    Right GPU

If we are going to part with the extra pennies for the one you suggested then would this one not be better?

and no the wife won't let me keep nothing the price up till we get to a good card, doing well so far I got an extra £10 so it will have to stay with under £40 limit or I don't get the monitor

Yes, looking at that GPU that will be better than the 4550 that I initially said :D
320 cores is a lot for that amount of money, be aware though that ATI and Nvidia cores are used differently just because a Nvidia card has less cores does not make it a lesser card ATI use 'floating cores' Nvidia use fixed.

As for the RAM, it depends on whether you plan on overclocking the RAM or not, if not then just get the cheapest set of 4GB you can (DDR3)
as mentioned the rest is personal choice and budget, I personally dont buy budget RAM as I have had a lot of them fail and yes they often come with a warranty, but the time it takes to RMA, you could be without your PC

Take some pics of teh build though ;)

LOL Yes intend to also intend to play a consulting role and let the wife have the hands on assembly work so that should leave me with plenty of time to get pictures :)

Once she is finished you should get her to join here in her own right in case she runs into problems. It would also be helpful if she joined so we can direct her to all the threads where you have made fun of her. [IMG]

OK consulting plan went out the window, and I ended up doing the build,

Few minor problems like a last minute case change resulting in having 2 80mm fans that wouldn't fit any where, and somehow when the wife (<- Notice) ordered the parts the CPU got missed of the list, however managed to source an AMD X2 2.9Ghz CPU locally from a place called PC 2000 for £52

also seems that when the Wife ordered the parts that their was a shortage of 500Gig HDD's so went for a 640 Gig Western Digital HDD

But all together and running sweet for Valentines day :) Now its password protected and I've been told not to mess with it :snckr:

If only she knew how easy it was to get past Windows Passwords lol, but we can't talk about that here for legal reasons.

Uploaded some pictures unfortunately 60% of the pictures taken weren't any good but next build I'll see if I can't get a decent Camera, and learn how to use it :p
