I'm having problems with an external HDD and I want to run chkdsk. I invoke
the DOS prompt with chkdsk L:\ and it says that I can't and that I don't have
sufficient priviledges ane I need to be in elevated mode. I am
"Administrator". How do I run this utility??

  2. Right click command prompt and click run as administrator.

  4. I've be reading your replies about right clicking on the command prompt
to activate "run as administrator". Please explain more about this
because I have right clicked so many places and don't get the option of
"run as administrator". Doing this with running checkdisk.exe

I was looking for help on this matter also. Saw this somewhere:

You may also want to do this. Right click on Command Prompt (Start
    Menu\Programs\Accessories), and choose
Run as Administrator. Copy the following, and Paste it after the
    prompt.

    sfc /SCANFILE="C:\Windows\System32\chkdsk.exe"

    Press Enter.

    Hope it works for you.
