My 6-month-old laptop, which is in the exact same room as my computer (bedroom), can load a webpage almost instantly and download 20mb files in around seven seconds whereas my one-month-old computer takes 15 - 20 seconds to load a webpage and half an hour to download a 20mb file. And sometimes it just refuses to work at all!

I've un-installed my antivirus (AVG) as I've had internet problems with it previously, but it unfortunately didn't do anything about my connection.

Moving my computer nearer to my router isn't an option either. I really have no idea what to do to make my computer's internet work properly.

Hi Doom, welcome to Computer Help Forums.

A few of my customers have had problems with AVG, which is a shame because at one time it was a must have AV program.
I tend to use Avast Free Addition myself...it's pretty good for a freebee. See the link below.

Note: Be careful to uncheck any offers of bundled software, like toolbars, etc, when downloading and installing.

As for your problem with the desktop, could be any one of several things.

    Try this:
    • Clear out your browser cache, and cookies, etc
    • Try another browser
    • Make sure that windows updates are up to date
    • Reboot your internet Modem
    • Run a scan with Malwarebytes-AntiMalware (Best to do in Safe Mode)
Please let us know how you get on..

Okay, after doing what you said, and then switching off my PC, my laptop and my router for about 10 minutes, the internet on my PC is improved a little. The internet on my laptop has started going really slow, but I care more about my PC :p

Thanks a lot for the tips, if anyone has any more I would be grateful.

Is there anyone else in your house connecting to the same internet modem as you?

Are you connecting wirelessly? If so, check the signal strength. You may have to reposition the computer to get better signal strength. You want to position it so that there are no metal objects between the computer and the wireless router. You don't want the computer chassis positioned in a way that it's between the antenna and the router.
